1120.0. "MACPAC and Rdb Performance" by 17185::GOLFNG::DONOVAN (Patti Donovan, 445-6390) Tue Mar 24 1992 23:09

I have a customer who is using MACPAC/D and is complaining about the
performance of Rdb. They only have a small amount of data at this
time. All of the Rdb database files reside on the same disk as do all of
    the DBMS files.

They said that when 10 users all try to update the same table it takes
    10-20 seconds.

I did notice that the problem table has two indexes, one of which
consists of 16 fields out of the 20 columns in the table! They said
that is because they may need to search on any of the 16 fields. I
explained how they should format an index if this is how they wanted to
do their searches as well as recommended RdbExpert and DECtrace. I am
wondering if it is really an application problem.

I talked to Pete Eggimann who is an Application Partner Engineer and he
said that most of the tuning has been with the DBMS modules.

I am concerned about this customer's perception of Rdb. The system
manager is very pro-Oracle and is planning on going to the upcoming
    user's group.

Are any other customers complaining about Rdb with respect to MACPAC/D?

    Patti

It would be hard to tell what the problem is given the description but
here are a few things to consider or look into:

    1)	Use RMU/SHOW STAT to see if there is a contention problem.
    2)	Use MON CLUS to see if the CPU or disk is the bottleneck.
    3) Set RDMS$DEBUG_FLAGS to "S" to see if the optimizer is producing
a poor strategy (highly unlikely if this is a small table).

They might also consider asking Colorado to dial into the system to do
the above along with any other performance analysis (this is probably
more a consulting issue than a remedial one though).

1120.2My guess is some locking problem someplace...COOKIE::OAKEYThe Last Bugcheck - The SequelWed Mar 25 1992 16:0219

A few other thoughts...

You don't have to have an index in order to use the column for retrieval.
In addition, depending on the version of Rdb, if the only column that
you're referencing is the 16th column in the multi-column (multi-segment)
index, the index probably won't be used anyway. A possibly better bet
would be 16 separate indexes and not 1 index with 16 segments... (if
they've got Rdb V4.0 then the dynamic optimizer can (depending on the
query) make efficient use of multiple indexes used in the query).

In RMU/SHOW STAT check the stall messages and see if user's are stalling
and what resource they are stalling for...

With the Debug Flag set to "S" see if the index is even being used (or
which index is being used). If sequential retrieval is being used, this
produces table-level locking which may be less than desirable.

> My guess is some locking problem someplace...

That was my first thought. Users are using the system for training
only, so 10 people access the DBMS database and then all the users
access the Rdb online transaction history table.

> You don't have to have an index in order to use the column for retrieval.

I agree with this line of thought exactly. I had asked the customer to
remove this index and do a before and after test, but they wanted to
    back up the database first.

> With the Debug Flag set to "S" see if the index is even being used (or
> which index is being used). If sequential retrieval is being used, this
> produces table-level locking which may be less than desirable.

In this instance the customer was updating. We had a slight problem
with the RDMS$DEBUG_FLAGS because I didn't know that the user process
    was not accessing the database.

> In RMU/SHOW STAT check the stall messages and see if user's are stalling
> and what resource they are stalling for...

The customer is sending me the several files including RMU/SHOW
STATISTICS and RMU/ANALYZE which I will post when I receive them.

I have asked them to test again after removing the index in question.
The have also increased the buffer size to 32 pages which I asked them
    to reduce in another test.

Unfortunately, I think the problem with this is application is the lack
of good design and use of CASE technology. Our goal is to get the
customer over this hump and eventually sell them RdbExpert and
    DECtrace.

the summary screen. I've included what I have received so far and can
ask for other reports if necessary.

1120.10Call MACPAC developersKCOHUB::DAZOFF::DUNCANGerry Duncan @KCO, 452-3445Mon Mar 30 1992 22:4411
My two cents worth .... I would immediately engage the author's of
MACPAC (Andersen Consulting I believe) as ask them to help.

While you can continue to try to find the problem, you're probably
going to have to get the author(s) of the software to alter
their queries, page structure, start_txn statements, indexes, etc.

Have you contacted anyone at MACPAC ? It seems this would be
an early tactic to help through this problem.

1120.11Disk I/O Rate?33054::BOWERSDave Bowers @WHOTue Mar 31 1992 00:497

Have you looked at MONITOR DISK? What's the aggregate I/O rate on DUA29? With
everything located on a single drive that's the first place I'd look.

1120.12Charge Your Customer for this work!TRCOA::MCMULLENKen McMullenTue Mar 31 1992 00:5419
    Patti,

I sure hope you are not providing all this information to the customer
for free. We are in the consulting/services business. Unless we start
selling services like application/database design/tuning, there will be
more layoffs, the stock will not go up, no raises for the remaining.

We should not feel responsible for someone elses poor implementation.
We will gladly help, but we MUST charge a fee for a valued service.

Now, if your customer is willing to pay my expenses and the normal
Digital consulting rate, give me a call.

    regards,

    Ken McMullen

1120.13Buffer size rather high??SOS6::LECOREGuy, Database Country Support FranceWed Apr 01 1992 12:0422

    1) A buffer size of 64 blocks seems pretty high for a database whose areas
    have pages sizes of 2, 5 (!), 7 (!), and 8. Couldn't the pages sizes be
aligned to 2, 4 or 8, and the buffer size set accordingly - as low as
possible - say 8 ? All those 64 block read I/Os are going to be pretty
    slow...

    2) In the root file I see :

Buffer count is 256, each is 64 blocks long... If I calculate right,
    256*64 = 16384 - i.e. 8 Mb of buffer pool per user ! Is there much
paging activity on the system ?

    3) The file I/O stats show that DUA29 is running pretty slow - 77ms
average access time is not so good - long I/O request queues ?? 64 block
    I/O operations ??

    - that's worth about 20 French Francs - who should I cross charge to ??
    (joke...)

    Have fun,
    Guy
1120.14We've been throught this before ...CIMNET::EGGIMANNWed Apr 01 1992 22:1922
I'm just catching up on the activity with this note, but let me start by
indicating that I agree with .12 which identified an opportunity to generate
consulting business to deliver a solution to MDC.

I can send the trip reports offline with the specifics, but we reviewed
Andersen's MACPAC/D DBMS and Rdb database and supplied them with logical
and physical design recommendations. Some of these recommendations were
implemented, others were not. These engineering services are free to
CSO's during the development of the application, but once the application goes
into end user engagements, we require Andersen or the customer to fund our
services.

Patti - If the local engagement partner for Andersen, or MDC want to fund us to
work with Andersen to solve this problem, we're ready to go. Since I know
most of the IT folks out there from the DBMS and performance work, let me know
if you want me to talk directly to Keith or his folks. Let me know how you
want to proceed.

Regards,

Pete

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Who supports Andersen
Consulting in Chicago? I have talked with several people so far, most
recently a Norm Beard, (312) 507-2658, who is Andersen's Rdb person.

Here's what Norm told the customer:

    1. All of the transactions were started READ_WRITE even those for
INQUIRY only. This will be changed in the next release. (This is
not a surprise, we thought that most of the problems were
        application related).

    2. Move the indexes to a different area from the actual data. The
customer will eventually spread the db over many disks, but thought
that with a 33 VUP machine and the latest in disk technology, this
should not yet be an issue. The customer agreed to move the
indexes first and remove the index with 14 fields which we decided
wasn't doing any good. He also agreed to do a monitor disk to
determine if it was I/O bound.

    3. The customer has not been able to get RDMS$DEBUG_FLAGS to work. He
is going to pursue this with the Support Center. I also suggested
that Andersen use this as well.

    4. I have strongly suggested to the customer and Andersen that they
use DECtrace and RdbExpert to tune the database.

Pete - I passed Keith's message on to the local sales rep. The
customer has not paid for MACPAC yet because of the poor quality and
lack of performance. They have had the software since July of '90.
I think that the sale needs to be made to Andersen that if they want to
get paid for this software, they need to use our services and/or our
tools to tune the application. Then after the customer buys the MACPAC
product, we can sell the customer our tuning services as needed.

The customer did mention that an ANALYZE/PLACEMENT should that it's
taking an average of 15 I/O's to the RDB$RELATIONS table to get a
record. What is normal for this? He didn't give me more specifics on
what he was trying to do.

I also suggested that he reduce the buffer size, but they didn't tell
me what difference that made. Andersen also said they were going to
tune the servers by whether they were used for inquiry or update.

    Regards,
    Patti

Ultimately ME ... but read on ...

Until recently, Andersen was, I believe, a CSH. This relationship
to Digital would be like the one Oracle has with us (ie, Digital
wants both of these companies to support our technology etc.).
As far as I can tell, a CSH type customer would get their Rdb
support primarily from the RSVP program. Normally, neither the
end user or channels groups would get heavily involved with CSH
types of customers. There's just too many CSHs around and, for
the most part, they shouldn't need much technical help. However,
I have felt for a long time that Rdb application vendors would
	eventually need more assistance.)

On the other hand, if the company (Andersen in this case) resells
Digital hardware and related products, their support would come
through US Channels sales support and RSVP. (Remember, we're
still a hardware company and that's where most of the channels
	business is at the moment.)

I believe Andersen has signed an agreement with Digital to move
hardware. So, that would open up a chance for channels database
people (like me) to work with Andersen. I have extracted pieces
of this note and forwarded to channels people in Chicago. I'll
try to followup next week to see if there is any interest on
Andersen's part to talk about these kinds of situations. I know
that there is a full court press happening now to encourage
Andersen (and all OEMs) to resell Digital services of all kinds.

So, you and your customer push from your side, we'll push from the
channels side and see what happens.
