| I've heard yesterday that DIGITAL will not even announce RdbStar at DECworld!
This fits well! WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING HERE! Oracle will distribute their
message about ALPHA and OSF/1 very quickly around the world, but our Rdb
customers are waiting to hear something from Digital.

A very good question indeed which hopefully someone from Rdbville would
care to answer. What is taking us so long to port Rdb to Ultrix or
is it a "wrong strategy"?

I'm sorry, but it seems now as this is just a rumor. RdbStar product management
has written a note stating they will demo RdbStar at DECworld. I think this is
the right answer to the O' folks.

Before you go spreading information, please be aware that RdbStar probably
won't be formally announced at DECworld. However, I've asked the RdbStar
folks to see if they can provide clarification on RdbStar's role at
DECworld...

Rdb will be running in IBU "industry" solutions areas all over DECWORLD.
It will also be prominently featured in the Discovery International IS
"Core" area. Every group in this area, including FABS, CASE, Office,
e-pubs, POLYCENTER, and NAS is showing solutions running on Rdb. It
certainly is the predominant rdbms at DECWORLD.
We are working on an Rdb, DBMS, and DBMS with ASK ManMan demo for Alpha.
We are also the predominent demo in the Innovation Center (future products
area), where we will be showing Rdb running with RdbStar.

Does that mean it will see a demo but not hear an announcement?

1119.7 | Vaporware doesn't cut it | COOKIE::BERENSON | Lex mala, lex nulla | Wed Mar 25 1992 17:57 | 26 |
| Under Digital corporate policies, policies we added after spending the
late 70s announcing products that we had barely started development on
and then having them ship as much as a year later than we claimed they
would, you have to meet certain criteria. Those criteria include things
like having completed more than 50% of your external field test.
Premature announcement of products can be VERY unhealthy (e.g., "The
Osborne Effect"), which is why you won't (and shouldn't) see such
announcements at DECworld. What will be available at DECworld is
demonstrations of working software that has not yet reached product
announcement state. Customers who want more information can always ask
for a PID.
If you read the base note you'll see that (1) There is nothing in it
saying ORACLE will actually be at DECworld running on ALPHA. The note
was actually asking who they should contact to try to arrange this rather
than saying "we'll be there" and (2) that still wouldn't be a product
announcement, it would be the same technology demonstration that will
occur for Rdb/VMS on ALPHA.
Be aware that if we announced vapor at DECworld, ORACLE would be the
first to figure out how to call us on it and make us pay a heavy
price in the market. We are better off selling the technology now, and
making sure customers understand we won't announce vaporware.

| Great! But I'm not sure the earlier notes said that.
.5> We are working on an Rdb, DBMS, and DBMS with ASK ManMan demo for Alpha.
I read this as "We hope to have it." And doesn't mention VMS.
.8> Rdb/RdbStar will have a large presence at
.8> DECworld. Customers will get the opportunity to see and understand
.8> our product directions with regards to ALPHA, VMS and OSF.
says "we will have Rdb, and we will have something on Alpha." The
rest of the note implies the "something on Alpha" will be RdbStar, on OSF/1.
Personally, I'm quite aware that we're doing Rdb for Alpha/VMS. But I'm
concerned that the message may not be reaching the people it needs to (such
as the author of .1). That's why I asked "what are we prepared to say", not
"what are we building."

| Hal makes some excellent points about timing and announcements.
DECworld is an excellent opportunity, however, timing is not optimal
for a product announcement. Rdb/RdbStar will have a large presence at
DECworld. Customers will get the opportunity to see and understand
our product directions with regards to ALPHA, VMS and OSF.
Attached is an article that will be published in the internal NAS
newsletter describing the RdbStar and the DECworld Demo. Dates and
platforms are to be discussed only under Proprietary Information

The following article will be published in the next internal NAS
Newsletter. It briefly describes RdbStar and the demo we will be
showing at DECworld '92. Thanks to Ben Feldman for authoring this
article.
Digital Debuts New Distributed Database Technologies at DECWorld
RdbStar is the internal name we have given to our new distributed database
technology. It is a state-of-the-art, portable, heterogeneous, dis-
tributed database management system. RdbStar is based on a distributed
client/server model and has been architected and implemented for pro-
viding transparent data distribution capabilities, and to actually ex-
tend the capabilities of foreign database management systems by al-
lowing their users to take full advantage of all the capabilities of
the RdbStar SQL language implementation.
Version 1 will deliver a fully functional distributed database man-
agement system on both the ALPHA/OSF and MIPS/OSF platforms. This re-
lease will provide the base technology for computing on heterogeneous,
distributed databases and is a key component of the Information Net-
work Layer of NAS. Significant Version 1 features are
o Entry Level compliance with the emerging ANSI/ISO SQL2 (SQL-92) Standard
and inclusion of most Intermediate and Full Level features
o Transparent read and write access to SQL Access Group compliant database
management systems
o Stored, multi-statement procedures
o Distributed database extensions including
+ horizontal partitioning
+ transparent distributed transactions and queries
+ distributed updates
+ updatable partitioned views
+ distributed database security
o Database system management features
o 3GL language support in the form of precompilers for C, COBOL and
FORTRAN and a compiler for SQL Module Language
o A Command Line interactive interface
o InstantSQL - a DECwindows-Motif SQL application development envi-
ronment
RdbStar will make its technology debut at DECworld in April. It will
be featured in the Innovative Showcase area and demonstrate most of
its V1.0 capabilities. The demo itself, which promises to be one of
the most exciting DECworld shows, is based upon a multi-media, dis-
tributed audio-archiving application which we are developing in part-
nership with Syracuse University.
