1117.1 | I don't know the current list | COOKIE::BERENSON | Lex mala, lex nulla | Fri Mar 20 1992 17:21 | 10 |
| I don't know the list of who ORACLE interoperates with. However, the way
they do it requires that you purchase ORACLE for every platform. That
is, we can interoperate with DB2 through VIDA without you having to buy
and run Rdb on your IBM system. The way ORACLE does it is that you
purchase ORACLE for your IBM system and then from remote systems it does
ORACLE=>ORACLE interactions with the IBM local ORACLE doing the IBM
access locally. So, we are much less intrusive on systems that don't
really want us there (and also, as a result, much less expensive).

1117.2 | Oracle says no Oracle DBMS required for DB2 | AUNTB::CLARK | | Fri Mar 20 1992 19:59 | 9 |
| My customer has told me that Oracle says they can interact with DB2
without putting the Oracle database on the mainframe. I told the
customer that it was my understanding that Oracle did need their
database on the mainframe. Now I wouldn't describe this customer as
astute but I did tell him to ask the question specifically. Are you
sure that Oracle needs their database on the mainframe for read or
write access to DB2.

| There is some lack of clarity on this point in the ORACLE material I've
seen. I've seen implications that they can do read, but not write,
without having ORACLE present on the IBM system. Also, they may have
introduced new software since the last time I looked into this.
You'd have to verify it with someone who pays lots of attention to ORACLE
interoperability (which I sure don't).

1117.4 | gateways are available | MRKTNG::SILVERBERG | Mark Silverberg DTN 264-2269 TTB1-5/B3 | Mon Mar 23 1992 19:27 | 8 |
| I believe the Oracle SQL*Connect gateways provide links to DB2, SQL/DS
TurboIMAGE and RMS without requiring the installation of the Oracle
database on the target system. I believe you need Oracle Server for
OS/2 and SQL*Net DECnet for OS/2 or SQL*Net TCP/IP for OS/2 depending
on the network protocol you use.

| i have been told by an oracle higher-up they have a link to Rdb but it
is not in the price book. They only pull it out when the customer
DEMANDS it.
