1098.0. "Gupta to VMS solution" by ODIXIE::STUMPF (Jacksonville, FL Navy Team 350-4927) Tue Feb 25 1992 16:12
I have an opportunity to grab some database sales/services if I can
propose a solution to the following problem. The customer is running a
Gupta database on a 486 with 25 PC front ends running Clippr. This
arrangement is using a product called Planet Libraries (sp?) for
connectivity and forms (I think it does the forms). I understand that
Planet Libraries is a LAN Manager based network from 3Com. This entire
solution has run out of gas and they would like a way to migrate this
database to a better suited platform, namely their 6320. I have never
worked with/against Gupta and know very little about it.
I need to provide a proposal to "as simply as possible" migrate to the
VAX to keep the system cooking while we propose a full blown production
database solution.
I have a couple of ideas:
1) Gupta is fairly tight with Oracle. Perhaps we could get oracle on
the VAX and import the database. We could put SQLnet with TCP/IP
on the PCs for the SQL access.
2) Put Gupta on a software fault tolerant Novell Server and use the
IPX transport to get the clients with SQLwindows (front end from
Gupta).
Can I get a RdB solution into the migration plan?? Can Gupta
access or import to a DEC solution is the question of the day.
This is a government customer and Digital has buying vehicles in
order to supply all the products so DEC would get the revenue (not
sure about Oralce on VMS - we used to able to do it), but I hate to
put a competitors products in the shop.
