1055.0. "Oracle V5/V6 with VMS V5.4-2 question." by MSAM00::ZAHIRYUSOF () Mon Jan 06 1992 16:57

Hi,

Can anybody help me with this question :

Is it really a requirement to re-install Oracle V5 and V6 and recompile all
Oracle Application Programs after upgrading from VMS V5.4 to VMS V5.4-2?

I could have checked with the local distributor of Oracle but I would rather
hear it from those who have encountered this before or at least heard from
    someone who had the experience.

Thanks for any assistance.

Rgds,
Zahir.

    This is a VMS question, & this is a UNIX conference. You might get a
    quicker response by contacting the VMS folks who work with Oracle. Try
    Tom Donahue @BXB for pointers.

    Mark,

    We know that for years you UNIX weenies have been envious of Rdb's
    success and contribution to the bottom line, but Rdb still does not run
    on UNIX!

    Well...is there anyone out there who already knows the answer to

1055.5Take the easy way out .... ask Oracle KCOHUB::DAZOFF::DUNCANGerry Duncan @KCO, 452-3445Wed Jan 08 1992 04:2217
	No offense here .... but ... the easiest way to get this answer
	is to simply call Oracle. I could see a reinstall of the database
	(which is generally a re-link) due to the fact that Oracle, at
	least in V6.0, linked to the VAX C runtime library. Soooooo, if
	our C runtime library had improvements (code path, performance
	etc), it may be very desireable to reinstall Oracle dbms.

	You didn't qualify "application programs" so I don't know if these
	are Oracle financial applications, mfg applications, "tools" (like
	SQL*forms, SQL*menu), or user written 3gl applications.  So I
	guess the answer is ... it depends.

	As a final thought, you may want to post this question in the
	RDB_access_for_Oracle notesfile and see if any of those developers
	hit on your bait.

	Good luck ... (but call Oracle too)

1055.7Re-link Oracle product for VMS upgrade !MSAM00::ZAHIRYUSOFThu Jan 09 1992 13:0917
Hi,
    Re. 5, thanks for the reply.

The local Oracle office has told the customer that they MUST Re-link both
the Oracle V5 and V6 Product, AND all of the applications built against
those products when upgrading from ANY VMS version to any other VMS
version.

You think that sounds strange etc. to you...the customer is having a hard
time understanding quality issues when they pay millions for Oracle
licenses.

Rdb/VMS Forever!
