Note 656.0 USSG Database program asking for your input No replies
DECWET::APPELLOF 29 lines 23-DEC-1991 18:29
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The product team for the USSG Database program is currently evaluating future
database strategies for both the ULTRIX and OSF operating systems.
Currently, a license for ULTRIX/SQL is included at NO-CHARGE with
the purchase of the the ULTRIX operating system; customers are required
to order a media and documentation kit ($995) to install ULTRIX/SQL.
We have heard feedback that customers prefer to order the database of choice,
and in general customers recommend against bundling a database engine with
the operating system.
Currently, we are thinking of the following strategy and are asking for your
input as soon as possible.
1. We should not provide a bundled database product with Digital's OSF
operating system.
2. Influence the major database vendors (such as Oracle, Informix, Sybase,
and Ingres) to provide a low-cost upgrade license for our ULTRIX/SQL
customers to their databases - for both ULTRIX and OSF. This allows
customers to migrate to an industry-standard database as well as
significantly reduce Digital's support costs - ie., Digital phases
out of the ULTRIX/SQL support business.
3. Through contractual DDS or CSH agreements, we should allow customers
to order their database of choice - from Digital. This would
include Oracle, Informix, Sybase, Ingres, Progress, and others.
Please send your input to either Kathy Appellof (DECWET::APPELLOF), or
Mark Silverberg (unix::mark) as soon as possible.
