1039.0. "where's Ingres in the tpc-a/b results ?" by WARNUT::BRYAN () Fri Dec 13 1991 15:32

I've just been perusing the lastest hardware vendor released, round
of tpc-a and tpc-b figures. Thumbing thru the list of databases used,
presumably chosen to show off the h/w at its best, one major database
vendor is conspicuous by its absence.

Now, far be it from me to blight Ingres's performance characteristics
but you know and I know that performance is not their strong suit.

This is not generally perceived to be the case and it's difficult
with no real justification, to get this across.

Could we use this point in pre-sales situations to introduce some
fud or am I missing something, like a missing set of benchmark
statistics. It would of course have to be done in a discrete, but
    effective, way.

    Charles,

True, we could use this in competitive situations but at the risk of
shooting ourselves in the foot. Remember, we have someting called
Ultrix/SQL on our U platfoms. The reply from ASK could always be "If
the performance of our product Ingres is as bad as Digital says,
why did their select this product to sell as Ultrix/SQL?".

Of course you know the answer to that. But you are right, Ingres
performace is bad and the whole world knows it.

1039.2Don't lose an Rdb sale to protect Ultrix/SQLCOOKIE::BERENSONLex mala, lex nullaMon Dec 16 1991 17:298

Because performance was not one of the selection criteria. And, you
don't really want to know the politics behind the selection.

Direct from the mouth of Ingres when we asked the same question:

Ingres is designed with high quality as its foremost goal; performance
is important, but not our primary focus.

    'nuff said.

1039.4'High quality' is in the eye of the customerBROKE::HIGGSSQL is a camel in disguiseWed Dec 18 1991 16:038
Did they define what they meant by 'high quality'?

In many customers eyes, performance and high quality are closely associated.

It's difficult to see how they can succeed in the database marketplace in the
long run without at least a story on performance.
