1031.0. "CA-Enterprise-DB competition - HELP!" by ROV2K2::DTURNER () Fri Nov 22 1991 02:20
Anyone know competitive strengths of Rdb verses Computer Associates
Enterprise-DB relational database? Anyone out there that used to work
for them who is willing to share thier knowledge?
Note 610 is somewhat informative but more information is needed to win
in a highly competitive sale.
The customer has a VAX Cluster with (2) 6210's and (2) 6410's. They
are running DECintact as the TP monitor and are using DECmessage Q for
the process to process message bus. The application is running a
highly automated distrubition center with two massive automatic storage
and retrieval system, smart conveyors, elaborate picking and packing
areas. Many, RMS multi-key index files are used for the databse. CDD
Plus is used to hold data definitions.
Needless to say, too many RMS files are causing maintenance problems
and they want to move to a RDBMS. The companys IS department is
pushing CA's Enterprise-DB and all the "tools" -- they are a CA IDMS/R
user. The customers hot button is speed of update from mostly detached
VMS processes in "real time" -- defined as sub-second update.
Even tough Rdb has an upper hand, CA has developed a proposal that
compares itself against Rdb and, according to the customers management,
was quite convincing. They will not share the comments with us.
We are proposing: Rdb, DECforms, VAX RALLY - for reporting only, Rdb
expert, DECtrace and Rdb Access for RMS.
I know there isn't much CA-Enterprise out there but I'm sure we must
have competitive info somewhere!
Thanks,
Dave

| I am also looking for Enterprise-DB info. Customer currently has 2 x
6540 in production cluster accessing RMS files. Cluster currently
supports 800 users. The customer wants to migrate to a relational
database to improve productivity, etc. , but is concerned about
migration(conversion) effort, performance impact. Computer Associates
is claiming that RMS to Enterprise-DB migration can be made without
recoding programs, just change logicals as data is migrated. This
environment would have to be slow. Any information would be
appreciated.
