ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ingres, an ASK Company, Monday
accelerated its drive onto the desktop, introducing PC-based versions
of its two high-productivity application development tools,
INGRESVisionPro for DOS.
Today's announcement follows last week's introduction of a new
Ingres Software Vendor program to provide links between popular PC
software packages and the INGRES database management system.
Together, these programs provide the ability for organizations to
develop and deploy sophisticated applications rapidly, integrate data
between desktop applications and Ingres or third-party databases, and
allow PCs to act as clients to virtually any host system in the
enterprise over all popular networks.
``The market for desktop PCs as a client platform for developing
applications for use on PCs or larger systems is about to explode,''
said Barbara Wehrle, director of product marketing for Ingres.
``With this release, we are committing to provide our PC-based
products concurrently with the release of new Ingres software on all
the other platforms we support, offering professional developers a new
degree of flexibility.''
INGRES/Windows4GL for Microsoft Windows enables software engineers
to create graphical database applications up to 60 percent faster and
using far less code than the current third-generation language
development systems.
It combines the time- and cost-saving benefits of an
object-oriented, fourth-generation language (4GL) with a graphical user
interface (GUI) management system.
``Products like INGRES/Windows4GL prove you can build innovative,
sophisticated client-server applications under Windows 3.0,'' said

Cameron Myhrvold, director of developer relations for Microsoft.
``Ingres has taken Microsoft's graphical environment for
application development and created a highly productive workbench for
database applications. Also, applications built on minicomputers and
workstations can now be deployed on Windows-based PCs.''
INGRES/Windows4GL for Microsoft Windows provides a single,
integrated development environment enabling multiple developers in a
networked PC workgroup to quickly build applications normally
requiring C or C++, a windowing toolkit and an SQL database interface.
INGRES/Windows4GL provides concurrency control, application
management, object version control, and an interactive test
environment, increasing productivity for the entire development team.
Applications created with INGRES/Windows4GL are portable across
numerous operating systems -- including DOS, Unix and VMS -- and window
managers -- such as Microsoft Windows 3.0, OSF/Motif, and DECWindows
- -- without code changes, and dynamically take on the look and feel of
the native environment.
Ingres also introduced a new version of its INGRES Tools for DOS
application development system containing the INGRES/VisionPro
application generator for character-based applications.
INGRES/VisionPro is a 4GL application code generator that allows
organizations to leverage their existing investment in terminal-based
systems. Its intuitive visual approach enables strategic business
applications to be created with unparalleled productivity.
And while INGRES/VisionPro is designed to meet the needs of the
most demanding developers, end-users can use it to build personal or
ad hoc analysis applications.
``At first, we were very skeptical of INGRES/VisionPro's ability to
perform as promised, but after a very short time, we found it reduced
application development time by half, even two-thirds in some
circumstances,'' said Paul Miller of London-based Miller Starr.
``Furthermore, we're more confident in the end product we've built,
the amount of testing it requires is greatly reduced, and the whole
functionality is improved in a way that our customers can see.''
Ingres also introduced today updated versions of
INGRESReport-By-Forms modules of the Tools for
DOS kit allowing greater functionality and flexibility.
Concurrent with these product releases, Ingres will also repackage

-----
all the INGRES/Net protocols into a single package to allow additional
flexibility for connecting PCs as clients to larger systems. The new
Networking kit will contain protocol support for all popular networks,
including NetWare, LAN Manager, TCP/IP and DECnet.
Ingres' new ISV program provides a technical and marketing
framework for ISVs to partner with Ingres, and can help them achieve
seamless integration of their decision support products with Ingres
database products. The program provides ISVs with on-line support, a
developer's interface kit, a tailored support package, timely product
information and the opportunity to develop joint marketing activities.
``Today's announcements demonstrate our commitment to providing
products for both the development and deployment of client-server
applications on the desktop,'' said Charles H. (Chip) Gliedman, desktop
products group manager for Ingres.
``These products provide unprecedented application power and
portability to and from mid-range and high-end systems, while our ISV
program shows our support for data integration using popular personal
productivity tools.''
INGRES/Windows4GL Development kit for Microsoft Windows 3.0 will be
available in December, 1991 for $995 per PC. The INGRES/Windows4GL
Deployment kit allows the deployment of previously developed
applications to end users for $200 per PC.
Future versions of Microsoft Windows will be supported when
released.
INGRES Tools for DOS with INGRES/VisionPro will be available in
December, 1991, and consists of INGRES Tools for DOS at $495 per PC;
the INGRES/VisionPro application generator at $495 per PC; and the
INGRES Embedded SQL Programming kit for the compilation of applications
into executable modules at $250 per PC.
The new INGRES Networking kit will be available in December, 1991
for $200 per PC and includes all available protocols.

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ingres, an ASK Company, Monday
introduced Release 6.4 of the INGRES Intelligent Database, the first
database server that can automatically react to changes in the database
and prompt external actions through SQL commands.
The announcement also initiated Ingres' new strategy of offering
enhancements to its entire suite of client-server products
simultaneously across a wide range of platforms, including PCs, VMS
minicomputers and all major Unix systems.
INGRES Release 6.4 is the first relational database management
system to provide database event alerters. Just as INGRES rules
automatically trigger internal database procedures to enforce policies,
event alerters automatically trigger external application programs
through SQL commands.
``Event alerters provide a simple way of capturing events that are
a natural result of everyday business activities, and allow
organizations to better model their business operations,'' said Marilyn
Bohl, vice president of engineering for Ingres. ``This unique method
of server-to-client communication allows the server to take a more
active role in managing applications, both local and remote.''
An extension of the INGRES Knowledge Manager, event alerters
monitor critical information contained in the database, such as
inventory levels, and then trigger external processes, such as faxing
an order to supplier, automatically through SQL commands. Unlike
existing methods that require complicated programs that expend valuable
system resources while polling for events, INGRES database event
alerters are activated only when an event actually occurs.
INGRES database event alerters can be used to automatically
generate late notice statements to credit customers when payments are
over a specified number of days late, send an alarm to a security
monitoring terminal if an illegal attempt to access the database

occurs, or automatically run a report when daily budget data is
received into a financial system.
The new release also brings more than 70 performance and
customer-requested enhancements to the INGRES Intelligent Database.
These enhancements allow users to fine-tune their environment, execute
queries faster, gain greater control over data access and produce
enhanced reports.
Release 6.4 debuts the Interactive Performance Monitor (IPM), a
powerful utility program for achieving maximum throughput in a
multiuser, multiserver, high-transaction database environment. Built
for database administrators, IPM supplies key information for
performance analysis and system management through a friendly,
menu-driven facility, including a detailed analysis of individual
servers, system utilization information, log file information and
locking system information.
``IPM is the kind of tool database administrators (DBA) need to
manage relational database products in client-server environments,''
said David Kellogg, group manager, server product marketing. ``It
enables DBAs to fine-tune their installations through an interactive
process by allowing them to observe the effects of adjustments while
the system is running.''
The INGRES database management system contains one of the most
sophisticated query optimizers on the market today. Release 6.4
improves the quality of the intelligent optimizer and query plans, and
boosts the performance of these plans. Other performance improvements
include BTREE index compression for reduced disk access and in-memory
sort algorithms to reduce CPU overhead.
Enhancements to Ingres' suite of client-server products will be
available within 90 days of first product shipment on PCs, VMS
minicomputers, and a variety of Unix platforms comprising 90 percent of
the Unix market, including those from Amdahl, Data General, DEC
(Ultrix), HP (HP-UX), IBM RS/6000, NCR, SCO Unix, Sequent and
Sun Microsystems.
Ingres' simultaneous availability strategy is made possible in
large part through its ongoing program to establish partnerships with
key hardware vendors. Ingres' commitment to supporting these
platforms, its technological sophistication and its partnerships enable
the company to provide the most technically advanced database products
across the widest range of platforms in the shortest amount of time.
INGRES Release 6.4 marks the first availability of the INGRES/Star
distributed database server for Unix platforms. As a result, with this
release Ingres achieves a new level of interoperability among clients

-----
and servers.
All Release 6.4 clients work with all servers, and all servers work
with all servers, enabling data from multiple databases located on
multiple computers to be integrated transparently. Applications
created with INGRESVisionPro, for example, can
access information in multiple INGRES databases and non-INGRES databases
through the INGRESGateways
as if they were accessing a single, local INGRES database.
Ingres is the only vendor today offering full functional
translating gateways to both relational and non-relational databases,
providing plug-and-play access to multi-vendor data. The gateways
allow users and programmers to use a single query language to access
data in multiple vendors' relational and non-relational databases.
INGRES/Gateways are available for transparently integrating non-INGRES
data from IBM's DB2 and IMS databases, as well as DEC's RMS and Rdb
databases and Hewlett-Packard's ALLBASE/SQL.
System pricing for Release 6.4 of the INGRES Intelligent Database
ranges from $4,000 to $460,000, depending on system configuration.
INGRES/Star ranges in price from $1,200 to $138,000 depending on system
configuration. System pricing for INGRES/Gateways ranges from $1,400
to $161,000 for DEC Rdb and HP ALLBASE/SQL, $600 to $161,000 for DEC
RMS, $5,300 to $345,000 for IBM DB2 and $7,000 to $460,000 for IBM IMS.
All products will be available in December 1991.
Ingres is a worldwide leader in delivering quality information
management products, and in supplying innovative database technology
for business problems. Ingres has consistently led the industry,
delivering the first transparent distributed database management
system, the first intelligent database and the first graphical,
object-oriented, fourth-generation application development tool.

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ingres, an ASK company, Monday
demonstrated the results of its new business strategies, announcing a
slew of new product releases and expanded marketing programs.
The product introductions launched Ingres' aggressive new
simultaneous availability strategy, and highlighted other programs
for independent software vendors (ISVs) and value-added resellers
(VARs), as well as a number of marketing initiatives.
At a press briefing held today, Ingres introduced INGRES Release
6.4, and announced that the entire product suite -- including the
INGRES Intelligent Database, application development tools and open
connectivity products -- will be available simultaneously across
personal computer, VMS, and all major Unix platforms, a first for the
industry.
``After today, any database software introduced without
simultaneous availability will be behind the times,'' said Dennis
McGinn, president of Ingres.
``Professional developers are no longer willing to wait up to two
years for a vendor to support the platforms they require. The
simultaneous availability of our product suite, the new desktop
initiative and other marketing activities, combined with our
intensive efforts to place the company on a sound business
foundation, give Ingres' technology innovations the business and
marketing support they deserve.''
This new focus has already contributed to Ingres' 20 percent
revenue growth in the fiscal year 1991 and 28 percent growth for the
first quarter of fiscal year 1992, despite harsh economic conditions.
Ingres is a major force in the international market with 62 percent
of its revenues derived from international sales, and the marketing
activities announced today are expected to expand Ingres' domestic
activity considerably.

In a related announcement today, the company also emphasized its
commitment to desktop platforms and announced the availability of its
leading-edge INGRESVisionPro development tools
for desktop PCs.
The cornerstone of Ingres' new marketing initiatives is the
simultaneous availability of its entire product suite across multiple
operating environments on disparate hardware platforms.
Enhancements to Ingres' suite of client-server products --
including the INGRES Intelligent Database, the INGRES/Star distributed
database, INGRESWindows4GL, INGRES/VisionPro, as well
as other application development tools -- will be available within 90
days of first product shipment.
The platforms covered under this program are personal computers,
VMS minicomputers, and a variety of Unix platforms, including Amdahl,
Data General, DEC (Ultrix), HP (HP-UX), IBM (RS/6000), NCR, SCO Unix,
Sequent and Sun Microsystems.
``With the introduction of Release 6.4, Ingres is the only company
providing the same set of servers and client tools for PCs, VMS-based
minicomputers, and 90 percent of the Unix market at the same time,''
said Bill Copeland, vice president of marketing for Ingres.
``Within 90 days we will provide database products that customers
have commonly waited up to two years to receive after the initial
release.''
Ingres' simultaneous availability strategy is made possible in
large part through its ongoing program to establish partnerships with
key hardware vendors. Ingres works together with each of its partners
to port Ingres' Intelligent Database, open connectivity products and
application development tools to each platform, and conducts
performance tuning to assure optimal operating efficiency.
Ingres' commitment to supporting these platforms, its technological
sophistication and its partnerships enable the company to provide the
most technically advanced products across the widest range of platforms
in the shortest amount of time.
Besides the simultaneous availability strategy, Ingres has
instituted a product life cycle program, aggressive programs for
working with independent software vendors (ISVs) and value-added
resellers (VARs), and communications programs.
These efforts are designed to provide complementary interfaces to
Ingres application development products, create new avenues of
distribution, and build awareness and generate leads for the company.

Ingres' innovative Product Life Cycle program, modelled after a
similar program developed at IBM, ensures the quality of its products
through a clearly defined process for product design, development,
testing and retirement.
The program ensures there's a real need for the products and
features being developed, based on a strict business plan rather than
opportunistic responses. The products announced today have been
undergoing formal testing for more than a year, and INGRES Release 6.4
has been beta tested since July of this year at 25 user sites
worldwide.
The new ISV program provides a technical and marketing framework
for ISVs to partner with Ingres and achieve seamless integration of
their products with Ingres.' Initially, Ingres is creating industry
alliances in the areas of desktop decision support, computer-aided
software engineering (CASE) and Unix applications to round out its
product line, but the ISV program is not limited to these areas.
The program will provide ISVs with 24-hour on-line support, a
developers interface kit, a tailored support package, timely product
information and the opportunity to develop joint marketing activities.
Ingres has established its VAR program to make its leading-edge
technology more accessible to VARs to help them provide complete
business solutions. The program includes the most sophisticated,
powerful and flexible application development tools in the industry,
tailored sales and marketing programs, effective communications
programs and technical support services.
Together, these programs assist VARs in achieving efficient product
development, reduced time to market, long-term profitability and high
return on investment.
New emphasis is being placed on advertising and public relations
activities through a comprehensive communications program directed at
increasing awareness of Ingres and its products. The program also
includes a series of customer seminars to build awareness and generate
qualified leads.
Ingres' new market-driven business strategy combines established
business practices with innovative database technology, and builds on
its recognized position as the technology leader.
The new product releases and expanded marketing activities
announced today demonstrate the extensive efforts made by Ingres' new
management team to focus the company on making its customers more
successful at building and using information management solutions.
