We are working with customers migrating from IBM 3090's to VAX , some of whom run Oracle on the 3090. We need to identify areas where there might be problems in moving the Oracle db from the 3090 to Oracle on the VAX. If the applications running on top of Oracle use only the standard Oracle tools.(SQL/FORMS,PLUS,ETC) are there issues we need to be aware of in the migration? Is there more or less flexibility in terms of tuning on the VAX? Does anyone have experience in moving an Oracle db from 3090's to VAXes? What are those issues? Any gotchas? Thank you in advance. Also posted in the DATABASE_CONVERSIONS note conference.

Let me amend the base note. I realized it appeared we were looking for problems in migration. What we really would like to know are differences in performance between Oracle on a 3090 and on a VAX9000 and what features of Oracle or VAX/VMS can be used to optimize the db. We have had very good success with tuning RDB dbs on VAX9000's and are concerned that the Oracle flexibility will be lacking. (of course, I know..it's not RDB). |
