969.0. "Oracle - VAX sizing question" by BOBSLD::DALE () Wed Aug 07 1991 00:44

MDSSC has an RFQ that requires a system to : run Oracle v6.0, Oracles SQL*net,
SQL+, RDBMS, SQLforms v2.3 & 3.0 and TCP/IP - support a 1 GB engineering DB -
support twenty simultaneous users (they wouldn't say what type workload) -
capable of providing a min. of 40tps by the TP1 benchmark (I know it's a banking TP
benchmark). They will run a benchmark that will build an engineering parts
lists and from that will do inserts, updates, deletes, table creates, table
deletes to get the true feel for system performance. They are taking it off
of A IBM 4381, and they won't tell the kind of performance they are getting.
This is a point solution, they are thinking cheap.

We were thinking 4000/200 w/32 MB mem. & RF72, an applicationDEC 433mp w/128k
cache option  w/32MB mem. & RZ24,25's or a mv3100/20E w/32mb mem. &  RZ24,25's.
Anybody have any thoughts on this ? (I know, not enough info.) Thanks in
advance.

969.1How about Unix?IJSAPL::OLTHOFHenny Olthof @UTO 838-2021Wed Aug 07 1991 10:004
    If you are considering the ApplicationDec, why not look for the Unix
    alternative? If it's a real point solution, why not a DECsystem 5500.
    Check the Oracle on Unix conference for details and performance
    figures. Hit KP7 to add

    I agree with -1....Oracle on a DECsystem 5500 sounds like a very nice
    fit with your stated requirments. Or if a client/server configuration
    is being considered, use a 5100 or 5000-200 as the server & serve
    DS3100s or DS5000s.

	One RF72 on a 4000-200 isn't enough disk for adequate performance
	of any application. If you decide to go with the VAX alternative,
	try multiple RF31 disks. You'll have a better chance getting
	performance out of the system. (Remember Oracle is CPU intensive
	so Ultrix is a better fit.)
