968.0. "Content Based Retrieval in Oracle?" by CAPITN::OLDING_NI (dtn 549 5928) Tue Aug 06 1991 19:54

    My customer is claiming that Oracle is claiming they can do
    Content-based Retrieval within the database. Does anybody know if this
    is true? Does anybody know if Rdb will ever do something similar?

    (They are claiming the capability to do indexed keyword-type searches
    in text stored in the database, not a simple CONTAINING...)

    Could it be that Oracle is referring to a product called
    SQL*TextRetrieval? From a handout given on this product on an Oracle
    seminar:

    What is it: - Adds text retrieval capabilities to an Oracle database
                - Enables to store unstructured text in LONG or CHAR
                - Enables to build applications to retrieve text

    Features: - Extensions to the Oracle dictionary
              - Extensions to SQL
              - Use of LONG within SQL*Forms applications
              - Oracle tables which act as indexes on the text
              - Utilities to load and/or index text
              - text retrieval utilities via SQL*Forms

    If you want me to send the information, give me your location and I'll
    posty it for you. Also you might want to pick up a brochure from your
    local Oracle shop.

968.2Must be an add-on product as .1 tellsCOPCLU::BRUNSGAARDWho said I'm paranoid ??!?Fri Aug 09 1991 14:0414
    It's got to be what as Henny talks about in .-1.

    At this time the Oracle optimizer is nothing more than a Pre T1.0
    product compared to Rdb, Ingres, DB2 and Tandem (and probably other
    products as well).
    Example: Like, aggregates, OR constructs nevr uses Indices (unless
    other operations are involved as well).

    Wonder why they offer another product that uses tables to do what
    database systems in generel offer for free without any coding effort
    from the user ??!!??

    Well heck have fun anyway

968.3Oracle = Marketing NOT technology !KCBBQ::DUNCANGerry Duncan @KCO 452-3445Sun Aug 11 1991 18:429
Content based retrieval ... exxxccuuussseee me ! Their BLOB datatype
isn't even large enough to hold their marketing slogan .... and ...
to make matters worse, their still behind everyone else in terms of
technology. Check our announcement of a remarketing relationship
with Verity. Their product TOPIC is one of the market offerings
for CBR. There's probably something going on with Verity that we
don't know about.
