959.0. "Ingres on VMS vs. ULTRIX/SQL" by COHO::HEALY (Network partner exhausted) Sat Jul 20 1991 03:58

I am looking for any information I can get on Ingres on VMS vs. Ingres
    on Ultrix.

The customer is committed to Ingres and has both VAX and RISC. This
particular department says they are doing "mission-critical"
applications. They also say they have "heard" some rumors that Ingres
on Ultrix is not as good as Ingres on VMS.

What's the difference? I assume it's not performance - are there
tools, etc, that are available on VMS and not Ultrix?

I know that the local Ingres reps seem much more comfortable selling
Ingres on VMS, and I will try to pin them down as to why.

My personal opinion is that I would like to recommend VMS if the
application is really mission-critical... or am I just being bigoted?

    Hello,

ASK/Ingres does their DBMS engine development on VMS and then ports to
other platforms. I've heard that they have sometimes had problems
    moving it to other platforms.

Ingres uses the operating system's backup to backup databases. On VMS
you get reliable backup via CRC and XOR blocks. With Unix systems, you
    may not get this.

There may be other reasons as well.
