957.0. "Rdb and Memory questions" by SRFSUP::JAIDKA () Thu Jul 18 1991 18:58
<<cross posted in RDB_40 and RDB_VMS_COMPETITION>>
How much memory/user should a Rdb database server be configured with? This
question was posed to me by a customer who is also looking at Oracle and
Sybase.
I feel that there is more to this question than meets the eye since less
memory/user would imply that we cannot store portions of the database in
memory, which I believe Sybase can.
In addition to the answer for the above question, I would also be interested
in finding out our competitors' capabilities in this respect and potential
counters to their knockoffs against Rdb. The obvious issues have to do with
overhead associated with locking pages in memory, searching large numbers of
memory buffers, etc. Are there others?
Thanks,
