Hi,
Does anyone knows whether there is any difference between Oracle/IBM
and Oracle/VAX ? Is the database itself portable as they claimed i.e
you don't need any conversion of data ? How about the application
itself ? and how about its performance - does it performs better on
IBM machine rather than VAX ?
A potential customer of ours is interested to switch from IBM to VAX
but retain their database and applications which is running on Oracle.

The big issue will be the kind for forms system that is being
used. For example, if the "application" is using CICS's maps
(forms), then you're totally out of luck. On the other hand,
if the application uses Oracle's SQL*forms, the chances are much
better. As you probably know, the way database files area allocated
on IBM systems and VAX systems (which is underneath Oracle dbms) is
very different. I would expect the customer to use the Oracle
export feature on IBM and the import utility on VMS. If I were you,
I wouldn't even touch the performance question ... too many variables.
An IBM 3090 will probably out perform a small VAX. Also, there are
some small things to think about, such as the differences between
the IBM block mode terminals vs our VT terminals and I'm sure that
keyboard mapping are bound to be different even in Oracle's SQL*forms
environment.
