I am in the process of preparing for a customer call where rbase (from OMNI?) is being used on a Mac LAN. The customer is open to considering new platforms, but have the following requirements: - client/server environment with Macs providing end-user access - new platform must be compatible with existing applications written in rbase In addition, Big O is our competition. Questions: I know that we can tell a great story about client/server computing with an Rdb based server and tools such as SQL/Services, DECquery, and Desktop ACMS providing client access. What can we tell them about interoperability with rbase? If the answer to the previous question is "nothing", what can Oracle tell them? Would it be a good idea to aggressively position our consulting services for doing custom development of a tool that would facilitate such interoperability? (At present, I don't have much of an understanding of the customer's internal politics, budget, etc. that might have a bearing on such a decision.) Thanks for any info that you may be able to provide, since I have not come across any note in related conferences that addresses this particular issue. ashim jaidka LA Accounts Group

Ashim, I do not know anything about Rbase; but I think we should turn your question around and ask Rbase (OMNI ?) vendor as to what their plans are for supporting SQL Access standards ? If Rbase does not support SQL Access, we can ask them about Mac Data Access Manager or Hypercard interoperability. Better yet, we can tell them about Lotus 123, Dbase IV, Paradox (all PC based databases) vendors having accomplished interoperability with Rdb and suggest that they should get on the RSVP program and do something to be competitive in the market place. regards Murli |
