942.0. "Ingres <-> Teradata" by HRCG::DAVIES (I'm so fast I'm always last) Mon Jun 24 1991 09:18

We have a customer that is going to use a Teradata system on their network
and they would like to have the following support untill Teradata are fully
SQL access supportive.

Ingres on VMS/or Ultrix to access a Teradata engine on the network.

If the above is possible then can they go from a Ultrix front end via the
Ingres system ( which I beleive can TODAY access a teradata system) to the
Teradata system and have the main front end on a U*ix based system.

1. Is the above possible?
2. If it is possible would it be practical?
3. Any other solutions that we may have missed?

NOTE: This is customer driven with regard to the suggested access metheods
        so far.

When you say that Ingres can access Teradata databases, what version of Ingres
are you talking about ? On what platform ?

In any case Ultrix/SQL (same as the Ingres 6.3 runtime engine) comes with the
possibility to access remote Ingres databases on other platforms.

So, if for example, Ingres on VMS can access Teradata databases (via some sort
of software gateway), your Ultrix applications should be able to access the
Teradata dbs using the remote access to VMS.

Of course, all this needs testing and proving.

    Ingres and Teradata HAVE developed an Ingres/Teradata gateway, initally
    on VMS but they were looking at porting it to other, UNIX, platforms;
    ICL RISC in particular.

    There is a rather large development for a leading jeweller taking place
    her in the UK at the moment ( ICL risc, ingres/Teradata. )

    If you want a contact try Keith Gupwell, @ Ingres UK or Dave
    Shuttleworth @ teradata, Chertsey, UK.

Thanks for the info.

We will be going in to see the customer to try and qualify his exact needs
and expectations.

It seems that we will need to go to Ingres to see what kind of access services
they can provide to the Teradata system via the VMS Ingres system.

thanks again.
