937.0. "Lotus 1-2-3 to Rdb to DATACOM" by DPDMAI::HYDE (Rdb ber alles OKO 487-2256) Thu Jun 06 1991 20:45

I'll be going on a sales call this afternoon.

Here's what we are proposing to replace their PC-based R-Base and
    Lotus 1-2-3 applications:

      Lotus 1-2-3 for VAX/VMS
      RdbVMS
      TEAMDATA

Now, we have a fly in the ointment. The sales rep just told me that
the customer has inquired about connecting their PC's (May be Macs or
IBM PC's) to their DATACOM database. (I'll inquire this afternoon if
their DATACOM database is related to their R-Base databases.) This
could be via the VAX we're proposing or possibly via a direct
connection. I believe the only access to DATACOM databases would be
read-only, rather than the read and write access we could give to Rdb
databases. I'm curious if we could connect two connectivity products
(PC-VAX & VAX-IBM) and allow access to a DATACOM database from within
a Lotus spreadsheet on a PC.

If we can make the connection(s), then so be it. But if we can't, or
if they must have read and write access to the database, I'd prefer to
go with our proposal as it stands above, perhaps adding read access to
    the DATACOM database.

    Any advice?

                                          Kurt

937.1dBASE IV or RALLY for ad hoc DB design?DPDMAI::HYDERdb ber alles OKO 487-2256Fri Jun 07 1991 16:4521
The customer request for a link from Lotus 1-2-3 (PC) to DATACOM (IBM
    370) was an alternative to their plan to migrate their application to
VAX VMS. It appears now that the strategy from above in this account
is to migrate to VAX VMS. While the programming manager and I were
talking bits and bytes, the sales rep and the decision maker above were
discussing strategy. So that request for a link is about byte from
    the bit bucket.

They would like a replacement for R:BASE for their 6 people who use it
to design ad hoc databases. Apparently, it has menu-based database
definition. I don't believe R:BASE is available on VMS. We're
requesting a demo of dBASE IV and RALLY at the ACT.

    Any suggestions?

Is dBASE IV a good strategy?

Are RALLY menus for database design similar to R:BASE?

    Kurt,

RALLY does have a menu driven database definition tool.

937.3In answer to the original questionBROKE::THOMASThu Jun 20 1991 20:229
Although you're no longer interested in accessing DATACOM from the PC,
I figured I'd answer the question anyway.

CA-DATACOM/DB is an IBM-based database system, running on DOS/VSE, VM,
and MVS. We do not provide an RdbAccess interoperability tool to
DATACOM, therefore we can't provide direct access to DATACOM from a
PC-based tool using SQL/Services. DATACOM data would need to be
extracted and downloaded to the VAX before it could be made available
    to the desktop.
937.4How about 3rd partyTRCOA::MCMULLENKen McMullenWed Jan 08 1992 17:004
    Ann,

Do you know if any third party solutions like Sterling would be useful
    in this.

I just read note 836 that offers some potential solutions. Any others?
