In Charlie Matco's Rumour Roundup column in the April 1, 1991 edition
of Digital review, is a "reported rumour" that Hughes is dumping Oracle
due to licensing costs. Its a sad day for Oracle when even their
customer's actions hit Charlie's often in-accurate column.
Does anyone know what Hughe's is switching too?

I don't believe it is ALL of Hughes that is dumping Oracle, but the
Trident Product Operations Division (I believe Division 76) is currently
looking at dumping them.
Instead of dictating to his people what database/4GL they should switch
to, the manager tasked his people with coming up with a 4GL
recommendation and a database recommendation.
The 4GL group has narrowed it down to 2 choices, and they are bringing
those choices in-house for a week to play with them. The final 4GL
choice should be made sometime this week.
We don't know for certain where the database selection is at, but VAX
Rdb/VMS is definitely in the running. The database group came up with
a Database Selection Criteria document. As far as I know, we were the
only ones to make a point for point response.
The possible competition is Sybase, Ingress, and System 1032.

After waffling back and forth, the P.O.'s are now being cut for Cognos'
PowerHouse and for VAX Rdb/VMS.
