Not necessarily so. Compuserve is indeed building (having another
third party build) a RDB interface. If you use straight 1032 and their
proprietary database then Yep, you are right. But Compuserve has many
other products now that work with System 1032. Their first step was to
build System 1032/SQL. This includes a Query by Example (QBE) facility,
Menu-Design Utility and Report Writer.
They already have access to RMS files through their System 1032
Application Facility. Access to RDB has been #1 on their user's wish
list for several years and the last I heard, it is being worked on.
I don't know how close it is to being completed.
May I suggest that they look at the Trifox Trim tools or SmartStar. If
you want to discuss these and what they might do for your customer,
contact the Center for Migration Services (not me personally please).

| Also check into a new third party tool which allows SQL*Forms
applications to access Rdb. -- yup, a reverse RdbAccess!
The product is called SQL Connect to Rdb/VMS (this name infringes
both DEC's and Oracle's trademarks), and it is produced by InSync
Software of Ronkonkoma, NY. (516)981-3000.

| It looks like the customer is going for an either-or situation as the
database engine with the desire to be able to hook into other
databases.
Advantages for Rdb:
DECtrace
RdbExpert - a lot of good writeups now
VIA products
CDD Repository
Get a futures presentation (V4.1+ features)
2 Phase Commit
High security
Multifile - Horizonal partitioning, vertical partitioning (future?),
High ability to tune to specific environment
Migration tools from Oracle to Rdb
etc...
My experience with 1032 is that it is more difficult to modify than Rdb
(not being relational) and that it doesn't have nearly the breadth of
tools, languages, support that Rdb has.
As far as SmartStar goes... when I last saw it last April it had some
problems with locking with Rdb still.
What functionality is the customer looking for? Application
development environment, 4GLs, query tools, report writers? Check out
Rally, Teamdata, DECdecision, DECquery (from PCs), etc...
