892.0. "Who does DATE manipulation well?" by DOD2::ROBERTS () Tue Mar 19 1991 17:12

Hi..

I I'm currently working on a proposal that has some crazy requirements.
There is a whole page of DATE requirements. I know of Rdb/VMS's capabilities
with dates and they don't meet these specs. I have a feeling that my customer
has seen someone who does these features, and I am trying to find out who that
is. Any help on these features would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know who does the following if anybody?

	1. Julian Dates (JJJ)
	2. YYJJJ Julian Dates
	3. RDBMS SHALL ALLOW SUBSTITUTION OF 3 CHARACTER or full month
		name in above formats
	4. substitute 4-digit year for 2-digit year
	5. determine number and name of day of the week, number and name of the
month, and quarter of the year for a given date
	6. Convert calendar date to julian date and vice versa
	7. Add so many days, months or years to a date and get a new date
without having to convert to julian date
	8. Compute how many days, months, or years there are between 2 dates
	9. When doing computations to dates, it should be possible to
choose whether SAT, SUN and holidays should be included.0

Thanks... Lisa

Well, tell 'em that those functions are in the VAX/VMS Operating
System, which is included with all valid Rdb/VMS configurations at no
    additional charge :-)

The who is ORACLE. They have VERY comprehensive date manipulation embedded
in the extended SQL syntax.

Does your customer have a requirement for all of these date manipulations?
Maybe someone is trying to knock the competition out of the game before it
starts.

Say you wanted buy a thingamajig. If you asked your friendly thingamajig dealer
for some advice, and he wanted to give himself an unfair advantage, he might
make a big deal about his thingamajig's Multi-mode Tri-color Thrumwidget(TM) and
convince you such was your requirement.

Maybe a single-mode monochrome thrumwidgeted thingamajig is enough?
