844.0. "Tandem Two Phase Commit" by TRCO01::KAMINSKI () Mon Jan 21 1991 16:42

Hello!

I'm in a competitive situation and need a resource for general level
Two Phase Commit questions and answers, can somebody give me a name
and number? They aren't skill testing questions, more like "Does it
work?" (I'm not an rdb person.)

Reading some of the older notes in the Tandem conference, their
Non-stop SQL rates very highly (only truly distributed data base in
the industry, or something like that). Does rdb 4.0 compare?

Thanks

Tandem provides the only truly distributed database on the market
right now -- but the database can only be distributed within a
single data center. So you can distribute your data across as
many systems as you like, as long as all the systems are in the
    same room.

As for Rdb V4.0 2PC capabilities: Yes, it works. A single
application transaction can update multiple databases in multiple
locations with guaranteed two phase commit integrity. In fact, an
application can update Rdb, RMS, and DBMS within a single transaction.
Our 2PC functionality is built into VMS (DECdtm) and works across
    DECnet.

    Re .1

My client has a Tandem system with the Database distributed between
Vancouver and Toronto! However, the performance was so bad, they had
to put all of the users on the Vancouver machine and shadow the updates
    to the database in Toronto.

I believe that their 2PC works across networks. I have not verified
for sure that this is what my client is using. Any comments from
    anyone else out there?
