842.0. "Informix <-> Rdb/VMS" by RUTILE::TOUGH () Wed Jan 16 1991 14:43

    Does anyone have any experience of passing data between an Informix
    database and an Rdb/VMS database? I'm currently assessing the
    feasibility of linking a third-party application using Informix to some
    of our existing applications which use Rdb/VMS.

    We currently have the ability to transfer files (not data tables)
    to and from other systems using FTAM. I'm not aware of any database
    gateway products that might be available.

    Within a couple of years we ought to be able to hook most relational
    systems up with SQL Access. Both DEC and Informix are active
    participants in the SQL Access group.
842.2Who's in SQL Access?IJSAPL::OLTHOFHenny Olthof @UTO 838-2021Fri Jan 18 1991 08:5713

    Anne, do you have a list who is in the SQL Access group and wich of the
    members actively contribute by helping define the protocols and
    interfaces. Also nice to know is wich participants are likely to
    demonstrate their capabilities during the summer event.

    Who represents Digital there?

    ps: We heared rumours that Ingres is missing. Is that true?

    Henny,

    I've listed the membership and a short description in topic 843.0.

    Almost all members are "producers", meaning that they are developing
    a protoype. Ingres has been a member since the early days, but they
    only recently moved from "observer" status to "producer" status.

    The only glaring ommision from this group is IBM.

    Henny,

    I spoke to Jeff Balboni today to ask about Ingres's involvement.
    They were one of the 6 founding members, although they've never
    been actively involved. I think I spoke too soon when I said that
    they are now a producer. Their representative only attends the
    management committee meetings, never the technical committee meetings.
    Jeff says that he doesn't think they'll be in any hurry to produce
    either a client or a server.

    Considering the success of Ingres/Star, they really have little
    incentive to develop a generic interface which would let their
    competitors catch up with their technology.
