827.0. "Northeastern University dropping Ingres" by RTL::CMURRAY (Chuck Murray) Wed Dec 12 1990 23:55
To whom it may concern - or be of interest... The system manager of the
VAXcluster at Northeastern University (Boston, MA) recently posted an
announcement that because of an "unacceptable" increase in the Ingres
license fee, the university would be dropping Ingres. She recommended
that Ingres users convert their applications to Rdb/VMS, and she gave
the name of someone at the university (probably a computer science prof
or one of the Academic Computing Center support staff) who could help
with conversions.
I saw this announcement when I logged into my account on NU's cluster --
I'm a part-time instructor of technical writing at the university (and have
been a writer of Rdb/VMS, RALLY, and RdbExpert documentation).
I don't know if there are any revenue opportunities for DEC here (Northeastern
is pretty strapped for money, as are many universities), but I thought I'd
post this anyway. Maybe some opportunities for good will, publicity, future
business, etc.

| It is Digital's policy to provide software free to colleges and
universities. It's some of the best advertising we can do.
