767.0. "Move Ingres out - burning desire!!" by MSDSWS::JANSEN () Wed Oct 17 1990 17:47

    Hi all interested Ingres folks.

We have a fairly large Ingres user here in Nashville who is unhappy with
performance and etc. Additionally they are looking at a half million
dollar cost for upgrading license from version 5 to 6.

We are looking for someone who knows Ingres REAL well who can come to
Nashville and support issues for this customer moving to RDB vs staying
    with Ingres.

Would anyone like to help or know any names I can call?

Sorry, I do not want to go to Nashville, but I suggest you post this in
the Ultrix/SQL (= Ingres). Moving from one relational database to
another should not be that difficult. Just re-work the physical
implementation (this assumes the original logical design and
    transaction analysis was done).

Could you please provide some more detail on why your customer is
unhappy. What is causing the performance problems - 4GL tools, database
engine, bad design, distributed processing/databse? What other problems
are they having with Ingres, what other Ingres tools do they use?

If the plan is to move the Ingres 4gl application to run on top of an
Rdb database, performance will be worse (this assumes an equal job was
done for the physical design for each product). The Ingres Tools for
Rdb is not what I would call a high performance implementation.
