| Barry,
There is some value to the report, but then it does not tell the
whole story. These type of reports generally look at database features
in isolation. A database alone does not solve business problems.
It usually requires networking, TP, office, decision support software,
plus integration with other vendors hardware/software. That's the
real story and most of the reports do not do this including the
MIC report and the M. Butler and R. Bloor report. If a customer
is committed to the "Digital's NAS" or "IBM'S SAA" messages,
wouldn't these reports be more valuable if they explained how well
the databases support these key architectures from the major vendors?
Database evaluations usually end up summarizing performance features
only. Maybe we can get Mike Booth or BO to tell them about MUMPS.

Ken, you're right in that databases alone do not solve business problems,
but lots of customers go shopping for databases *first* then worry about
what else can help them solve their problems. For this reason, "independent"
database evaluations are VERY valuable to the field, and to the customer in
helping them make their decisions.
I also would like customers to commit to an architecture, but how do they
know that the architecture will solve their problems unless they try it
first. Usually, as a means for keeping the costs at a manageable level, they
will buy a product at a time - more than likely that first product will be the
database.

729.3 | Sure, keep those reports coming | IJSAPL::OLTHOF | Henny Olthof @UTO 838-2021 | Fri Sep 07 1990 13:38 | 10 |
| Sure, If you were to buy a new car would you be interested in the
opinion of professional testers or not?
What you then do is value the arguments that are used to rate the
different models according to your own situation and take the
conclusion from that into account.
So yes, we need more reports on our products.
