From: IJSAPL::OLTHOF "Henny Olthof @UTO 838-2021" 24-AUG-1990 12:59:22.26 To: CURIE::BRAKO CC: OLTHOF Subj: Oracle mentioned in Product Insight Anne Marie, I would like to make a comment about an article in the July/August issue of Product Insight. First I would like to compliment all people involved for the great job they are doing. The magazine is very readable, gives good and relevant information in articles, which are never too long to read. I've found that customers find the magazine very attactive and informative. I'm however surprised by the picture on page 18 in the client-server section. An overview is presented about our interoperability on databases with IBM and PC integration. However, also Oracle is mentioned. Currently we have no selling product that gives a "VIDA for Oracle" style of functionality; the picture however suggests otherwise. Even more serious, the picture suggests that we have a close relationship with Oracle. This is totally wrong, we consider Oracle to be the main competitor in database and CASE products on our platforms. Due to Oracle's efforts we have lost account control at some sites and the competition gets more serious each day. Can you explain why Oracle deserves to be mentioned seperate and why the picture is not restricted to the box "Other databases and Applications". Kind regards, Henny Olthof, EIS Holland

721.1 | ORACLE interoperability is coming soon | BROKE::THOMAS | Fri Aug 24 1990 18:44 | 30 | |
Henny, At DECworld we program announced the Data Integration Server, a 4000 or 6000 based server which is used to integrate many different user platforms and data sources. The Data Integration Server will be a package including hardware, software, and EIS services which will integrate the users environment. As part of this announcement, we also program announced a VIDA-like product that provides access to ORACLE, DEC RdbAccess for ORACLE on VMS. (The product name has not yet been announced.) The formal announcement of this product is scheduled to appear in the 29 October issue of Competitive Sales Update. It's true that ORACLE will attempt to use this product to their advantage by claiming that DEC has recognized them as the premier VAX-based database. But ORACLE already claims DEC's recognition because of the various agreements they have for their applications, etc. But I can tell you, ORACLE is also concerned about this product, because it gives the customer an easier mechanism to convert their systems to Rdb. Now the customer will be able to develop new applications that can access existing ORACLE databases and new Rdb databases. RdbAccess supports Data Distributor, so RdbAccess could be used to build a Data Warehouse. The Data Warehouse could be used to consolidate data from Rdb, DB2, ORACLE, RMS, VSAM, IMS, etc. Also, RdbAccess supports requests from workstation-based SQL/Services applications. If you have any questions about the Rdb Interoperability products, please send me mail. Anne Thomas DBS Product Management |
