718.0. "PC Powerhouse Migration to VAX?" by TROA02::SPACKMAN () Wed Aug 22 1990 01:11
Since I wasn't getting any response to this question as a reply
to an older topic, I thought I'd repost it as a topic in itself.
Perhaps that will cause it to reach a wider audience. I also posted
a similar question in the Powerhouse conference, but it too is not
getting any response. I'm not sure if that means that no one has
done such a migration, or those that have are all on vacation.
In terms of products other than Powerhouse, I would read that
to mean Dbase IV, Focus, etc. Are there others?
Thanks
Janet

-< Migration Effort? >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How much work is involved in moving a Powerhouse application, including
the data, from a PC platform to a VMS platform where the data will
reside in an Rdb database?
Do any of the other products mentioned handle this migration effort
any better?
Keep in mind, this question is specifically referring to an application
that is developed & deployed on a DOS PC, which is where the data also
resides, and at some future point in time, is migrated onto a VAX &
into an Rdb database. I am NOT talking about access to an Rdb
database from a PC.

| Janet,
From what I have seen of the powerhouse product, the application
is very easily ported over. The source code runs on either
platform with very few command exceptions.
I feel the data will port over rather simply as well. I don't
know the specifics of the communication, for the:
READ PC-POWERHOUSE
WRITE VMS-POWERHOUSE
but, I think the process is about that easy.
Conversion of Powerhouse is best discussed with a Powerhouse
person.
I recommend either of the three people listed:
Curtis Geckle (pronounced ge'-kel (no long vowels)) VMS
Phyllis Semcer Tech Mgr
Rich Rosspond PC

Tell them that I sent you.

| Janet,
I should just phone you but, I have seen COGNOS develop and test
the application on the PC. The application was then moved to the
VAX/VMS environment and the data resource manager used was Rdb/VMS.
There were only a few changes done. I believe it was mostly dictionary
pointers that needed to point to Rdb. I have a local COGNOS person
that we can phone.
