I know that Sybase has problems supporting large database under VMS due to it's single file structure and bound volumes. Is this also true under Ultrix? Also... Does anyone have any idea what the largest Sybase database currently is? My prospect is trying to support 200+ gigabytes under Ultrix & Sybase. Any comments??? Thanx, Paul [cross-filed in Ultrix/SQL]

Now that I've stopped laughing... Sybase has a couple of VERY LARGE databases owned by Wall Street firms. Those accounts will tell you that when it comes to support, "money is no object." Sybase can handle large databases, but only with excellent support. It is logisitics and operations support that will hurt on a database that size. Things like backup, restore, recovery, etc. that are trivial to smaller databases (that most Sybase customers have) get to be critical with very large databases. The Sybase customer base is HEAVILY weighted toward small workstation databases. There are precious few big ones. Trying to put 200+ Gb. on Ultrix/Sybase would indicate to me that the customer has extremely limited career goals. ---- Michael Booth | |||||

i support wall street accounts which use sybase is REAL world update intensive applications; the largest system is used by the American Stock exchange on twin Sybase database which TOGETHER amount to 75MB; the log area for both add up to 150MB. This was originally a single 80MB database which was split due to disk contention and the inability to split off data tables (using V3.2). I have never seen a successful system under sybase above the above size. I once worked on one for Bear Stearns but the customer threw them out. As Slybase only provides 3-4 year limited licences, they were trying to milk them for 1-2M for each license extension. The have since migrated to Interbace due to cost reasons. /los |
