| Almost any database (except Rdb) has connections to SQL/DS. Sybase,
Ingres, Oracle all have such capability. Focus can run on both SQL/DS
and Rdb, and transfer data Focus-to-Focus. I have no idea why Digital
has failed to build a gateway to SQL/DS.
SQL/DS is IBM's "other" (other than DB2) relational database. It is
used extensively (better than 9,000 licenses) in the non-MVS world.
That would include Labs, scientific, development, etc. It is most
definitely a very successful IBM product. I think it is developed in
the Toronto IBM development facility.

| SQL/DS was IBM's first production relational database. It appeared
two years before DB2. SQL/DS is IBM's non-MVS mainframe-based
relational database. SQL/DS runs under both DOS/VSE and stand-alone
VM operating systems, although the two environments are not entirely
compatible.
SQL/DS under DOS/VSE requires CICS for interactive SQL and online
applications. SQL/DS under VM supports CMS users. CICS under VM
is very different from CICS under DOS/VSE, and I don't know if you
can access VM/SQL/DS from VM/CICS applications.
SQL/DS under DOS/VSE running as a guest operating system under VM
is equivalent to SQL/DS running under DOS/VSE.
Answer/DB Extractor (from Sterling Software) runs under DOS/VSE
and can be used to access SQL/DS. VAXlink V1.1 is supposed to
support Answer/DB Extractor in the DOS/VSE environment, although we
were not able to find a DOS/VSE field test site. Officially, VAXlink
V1.1 does not support access to SQL/DS under DOS/VSE, but we would be
happy to support a test site.
Answer/DB Extractor does not support the VM environment, so we do not
have a mechanism to access SQL/DS under standalone VM.
