694.0. "Need information on Interbase!" by HILLST::AMELI () Thu Jul 19 1990 18:17

Hello,

Has anyone had any experience with Interbase? How it's functionality compares
with Rdb and it's strong and weak points? I appriciate any kind of information!

InterBase does not support Rdb's performance features (Fine grained
partitioning hash keys, etc.). Instead, InterBase has opted for more
functionality. InterBase supports 2 Gb. BLOBS, and has "filters"
built-in. A filter displayes the BLOB data in a certain way. Thus, it
is relatively easy to store graphics and display them appropriately on
certain devices. InterBase is portable. It runs on VMS, Unix System V,
and OS/2, (ULTRIX soon).InterBase supports an enforced two-phase
commit. They offer triggers, stored procedures, and "event alerters."
That is, triggers which call a procedure outside the realm of the
database. Gateways are offered fto Rdb, RMS, Oracle, maybe others.

InterBase is weak in SQL, with a rather anemic version, and high-volume
performance. But functionality is its strong suit. For more deatils,
check the current Martin Butler database comparison.

More Input, Mike, more Input! I need more Input!
Mike, you described InterBase in general terms. Now, can we be more
specific? What does RDB have that Interbase doesn't? How can we compete
    against them?

I have a customer who is actually sold on InterBase, but is looking at
RDB too. He probably will choose InterBase. I see them as a
competition, and maybe a virulent one since they talk about DSRI
    but offer multiple platforms....

How do we compete against InterBase with RDB?

    More info... more .. more

    Oh, what a shame!

Thanks Gil! Is there anybody else who can give some insight into
    Interbase?

N.B.: I saw the product demo-ed at Interbase's office last week. Thing
is honestly impressive for imaging, particularly in its concept of
storing/retrieving a BLOB+filter as one entity. Tools suite is not
strong, but their PICTOR product provides "instant" windows-based menus
with point-and-click functionality that's darned impressive for
    prototyping.
