693.0. "Rdb --> INGRES" by SRFSUP::MADDEN () Thu Jul 19 1990 02:56

Help!!

I have a customer who develops and sells software using Ingres.

He wants to convert all his and his customer's applications to Rdb and
has asked me for some justification for the conversion so he can sell
his customer on the idea.

Is there any documentation out there on the benefits of Rdb espically
over Ingres? And documentation on the conversion process from INGRES to Rdb?

My customers concerns include the following:

- Is this generally a painful conversion?
- Can they develop C code with Rdb?
- Is Rdb simple for the end user?

Also is there any comparison to Rally VS Ingres' 4gl available.
They do not like Ingres' 4gl at all and are interested in the 4GL offerings
for Rdb.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Here are some pointers to additional sources of information concerning
    your problem:

    1. Mike Booth's INGRES Competitive Fact Sheet.

           NOVA::PM01:[BOOTH.PUBLIC]INGRES_COMPETITIVE.PS

    2. Digital's relational database on Ultrix is Ultrix/SQL (alias Ingres)
         Digital will be selling translators that convert C, Fortran, and
         Ada programs using VAX SQL to Ultrix/SQL and Ultrix/SQL to VAX
         SQL. these translators have been announced, and I believe that
         they are curently in field test. Contact the product manager Abe
         NOVA:: Mathew.

    Rdb is just the database engine. It does not include any 4gl or
    end-user query tools. (Unless you want to use interactive SQL.)

    DECdecision, Teamdata and Datatrieve are possible Digital products for
    end-users.

    There are a *large* number of 3rd party 4gl's and end-user tools
    available to work with Rdb. This is strong advantage for Rdb relative
    to Ingres or Oracle.

    The BEAGLE::RALLY_COMPETITION notes file has a lot of information on
    these 3rd party tools.

    Those with most credibility seem to be SmartStar, Powerhouse, FOCUS and
    Uniface.
