691.0. "Enterprise:DB Expertise?" by STLACT::RELIFORD (The days are 10 hours to short) Tue Jul 17 1990 22:57

We are searching for someone with Computer Associates Enterprise:DB
(formerly IDMS/SQL) experience who could consult with our customer on
    E:DB -

    1. Database capabilitites
	- Journaling & recovery
	- Reloading & reorganization
	- Tuning options

    2.	Utilities/tools that are available for
	- Analyzing DB structures
	- Capturing and analyzing DB usage statistics

Through the purchase of another company, the customer has inherited an
application built with Knowledgebuild on IDMS/SQL. They suspect that
the performance of the application will not be capable of meeting
    required user workloads.

The consulting effort we are looking for at this time could range from
a conference call to possibly 2-3 days for site visits depending on the
actual capabilities of E:DB in the above areas.

At this time, the customer is seeking to determine whether E:DB is
lacking basic database support utilities/tools or whether they have
problems with the personnel and the database vendor.

If you can share a little of your time and expertise in E:DB to help us
get over this initial hurdle, please mail me.

If the database does lack the support utilities necessary for what is
going to be a large OLTP application, the customers next step will be
the much larger job of assessing the extent to which their
knowledgebuild application is salvageable on Rdb and estimating the
effort to identify what portions need redesign and rewrite with Cobol,
Rdb, SQL, ACMS and DECforms. If it is not lacking the necessary
support utilities, then our job is to educate them on the problems of
deploying a distributed OLTP application built with a non-distributed,
    non-OLTP product.

    Steve,

Try phoning Richard Bimm in Toronto. I believe Richard use to be
a developer with Cullinet (and CA for a few months). His mail stop
is TRC and his DTN is 637-3243.
