Hi, I do alot of pre-sales Rdb presentations and I pride myself on being able to do a good Oracle hack, anywhere from the ankle upwards. In the wake of the recent Oracle CSH agreement I've been trying to think of the best line to take when someone from the floor raises the topic. BTW I have read all of note 1212 in the marketing notes file. The best alternative seems to be : " Digital is a large corporation with several marketing groups who's interests occassionaly conflict. In this instance our Financial Accounting and Business Systems group, FABS, decided that in order to meet their business goals they needed to have a closer business relationship with somebody who they saw as being most able to help. Within Digital any one marketing group has the power to sign up a new CSH, it is not a decision made by a cross marketing function. The responsibility for DECtp marketing lies with the Corporate Storage Systems Group. Everybody within the company working in the DECtp area are appalled by what the FABS group have done, there is however nothing, in the short term, that we can do about it". I would still feel exposed to the following : - It's an odd decision from a Corporation that tells me they are commited to Rdb and see Oracle as one of their main competitors. - Is their nobody within Digital who co-ordinates the activities of different marketing groups ? - How has this decision been viewed by other CSH's involved in the financial area, Ross etc. - How do Ingres, who you have also recently signed an agreement with feel about this. Do you ever get that sinking feeling ? It would be a very astute customer that raised all the above points. If I was selling Oracle though, they would know what to ask ! Anybody have any alternative arguments ?

Hi, I do alot of pre-sales Rdb presentations and I pride myself on being able to do a good Oracle hack, anywhere from the ankle upwards. Me, too. The best alternative seems to be : I can't admit to a customer that I'm appalled, even though I get a "fight-or-flight" adrenalin rush every time I think about this "sweeping marketing agreement..." so, I agree with you down to here---v Everybody within the company working in the DECtp area are appalled by what the FABS group have done, there is however nothing, in the short term, that we can do about it". - It's an odd decision from a Corporation that tells me they are commited to Rdb and see Oracle as one of their main competitors. I'd answer this one, "I stand by my assertion, Mr. Customer, that Rdb is the best relational database for the VAX, and I'm sure I'd get backing all the way up to Mr. Olsen's office." - Is their nobody within Digital who co-ordinates the activities of different marketing groups ? For this one, a sheepish grin and something about valuing differences. - How has this decision been viewed by other CSH's involved in the financial area, Ross etc. "I've recommended Ross and others, had my customers buy them and be satisfied with the performance, and Mr. Customer, I recommend them to you." - How do Ingres, who you have also recently signed an agreement with feel about this. "We have purchased the Ingres technology, re-engineered it for our RISC/ULTRIX platform, and it is the best database for that platform." That's how *I'd* answer, but I'd still like to hear something from Ed Muth, Mike Booth, or some such respected individual to find out how we should *officially* answer these questions. Bruce | |||||

Yes, I like some answers too. I feel just like you do. I've the got the edge sharp on Oracle and someone takes the knife away. What is our strategy now ? Peter |
