642.0. "Ingres 2pc support" by WARNUT::BRYAN () Tue May 08 1990 19:19

    Does Ingres have its own implementation of 2pc ?

    I've just returned from an Ingres seminar and their presenter swore
    blind that it did and had done so for about 3 months. He even explained
    how it worked, it sounded just like ddtm. He was referring to Ingres v6.3.

    I've seen or heard nothing of this until today. I knew Ingres did offer
    some distributed query facilities, can't remember the details, but
    not fully fledged 2pc. Is this guy being serious ?

    Ingres can support the 2PC PROTOCOL. That is, you can code the 2PC. But
    there is NO ENFORCEMENT. In other words, you can write the code, but if
    anything goes wrong, no corrective action will be taken.

642.2Why DECdtm is differentMOVIES::JJOHNSONAcorn would be shipping nowMon May 14 1990 00:3120
    I haven't heard anything about Ingres' 2pc capabilities, but I think it
    is worthwhile to point out a major differentiator for DECdtm (aka DDTM)
    over virtually all of the competition:

    It is designed to not be limited to any specific database manager.
    Already it is supported by 3 (Rdb, DBMS, and RMS Journaling). Both TP
    monitors are working on their support of it. And we're pursing an
    aggresive development plan to have a stable, published interface for
    resource managers bundled into VMS within the next 18 months.

    It was designed with a view that 2pc acted as 'glue' between operations
    of differing resource managers. We've done the initial work and proven
    the basic concept. Now we're cleaning up some rough edges we've found
    and working towards publication of the interfaces.

    This model simply cannot be pursued efficiently by a 2pc implementation
    based within a single resource manager.

    fwiw,
    Jim.

    VAX RALLY is planning to support DECdtm in V2.2.

642.4Sort of, again...NOVA::STEINERSat May 19 1990 21:044
    Ingres is about 1/2 way there. They announced 2PC with 6.3 but it will
    be the 2PC support in Ingres Star that will complete the picture and
    that is not out. Don't know the timing on that.

642.5A little moreHAMPS::STEPHEN_IIain StephenTue Jun 12 1990 19:0018
    I was at Ingres last week to hear their proposed sollution to keeping
    a 'hot backup' database on a second VAX Cluster.

    They drew a picture looked just like ACMS and queues plus Rdb/VMS.
    However, they were very general about how it would work. Things
    like

    "It's written in C and SQL"'

    "Our European Development people have put it together"

    etc., etc.

    I was impressed with everything else but this section of the bid.
    This reminded me of the Oracle salesman with his overhead projector
    as his development workbench !
