631.0. "market leadership figures" by WARNUT::BRYAN () Mon Apr 30 1990 12:48

    Where does the data come from to substantiate our claim to having the
    market leading relational database on VMS ?

    I was giving a presentation the other day and some bright spark
    questioned this assertion. Oracle also claim to have the market
    leading db on VMS, surprise,surprise, probably Ingres to !

    I knew someone would question this sooner or later, it was just a matter
    of time. Is there a definitive reply I can give, what can I say to
    sow the seeds of doubt around our competitors claims or should I just
    skip the point because nobody really knows ?

631.1It's RealCLYPPR::BOOTHWhat am I?...An Oracle?Mon Apr 30 1990 15:398
    Computer Intelligence, January, 1990. CI measures an installed base of
    about 1700 customers.

    If revenue (i.e. price) is used, as by Oracle, then Oracle has the
    lead, since obviously they charge well more than we do. Ingres can't
    claim the lead at all.

631.2Ever better, we do 40%, Oracle does 25??IJSAPL::OLTHOFHenny Olthof @UTO 838-2021Fri May 04 1990 09:3710
    Even better,

    yesterday I attended a seminar on protable SQL (not portable databases)
    and the presenter mentioned a marketshare on VMS of 40% for Rdb and 25%
    for Oracle in 1988!

    Of course, I did not stand up to correct him or ask for the origin of
    these figures.
