626.0. "SQL Services ->non Rdb database" by TRCO01::SANDHU () Tue Apr 24 1990 21:33

    Could some answer this or lead me to where I should really post
    the question:

    Can we use SQL Services from a PC to access a 3rd party database
    on the VAX? We are trying to get into an Oracle account specifically.
    So, could we attach to an Oracle database by using SQL Services.

    Thanks in advance.

626.1Client/ServerTRCO01::SANDHUTue Apr 24 1990 21:373
    Someone just mentioned that because of the Client/Server aspect
    we may not be able to do this? ie. the Server is too closely tied
    to Rdb. Is this true?
626.2Only RDBCREDIT::BALBONITue Apr 24 1990 22:364
    Yes, it's true. SQL/Services will only talk to Rdb/VMS. As you pointed
    out the SQL/Services server is closely tied to Rdb/VMS.

626.3Rdb access to ORACLE ???POBOX::LACEYACMS/Rdb, the transaction AutobahnWed Apr 25 1990 04:463
    What about when 'Rdb access to ORACLE' is released?

    If the requests are going to originate from a PC 'Rdb Access to Oracle'
    won't work.

    At some point in the future Digital hopes to solve this problem by
    using SQL Access. SQL Access will allow requests originated from a
    client to communicate with most 3RD party databases using a common wire
    protocol.

626.5SQL/Services = RdbCLYPPR::WASSERMANDeb Wasserman, DTN 264-1863Wed Apr 25 1990 17:449
    Excuse me, but how does the inability to use SQL/Services to access
    Oracle and other non-Rdb databases consitute a "problem"?

    SQL/Services' whole reason for existing is to allow desktop integration
    with Rdb/VMS databases. Of course the server is "too" closely tied to
    Rdb. It was intentionally designed that way.

626.6Not a problem for mePOBOX::LACEYACMS/Rdb, the transaction AutobahnWed Apr 25 1990 22:494
    It doesn't necessarily constitute a problem. I was just wondering
    because SQL-Services can access DB2 through Rdb & VIDA.

    Actually Paul you are right. I didn't understand your question when you
    said 'What about Vida for Oracle'? Vida for Oracle will work in
    conjuntion with SQL/Services but it would be read-only access.

    Good Point....

626.8Unannounced productsSQLRUS::THOMASMon Apr 30 1990 18:308
    Hey guys, let's not discuss unannounced products in here.

    "Vida for Oracle" or RdbAccess should not be discussed in open notes.
    For information on forthcoming interoperability products, please
    contact me directly.

626.9Interoperability Gateways support SQL/ServicesSQLRUS::THOMASMon Apr 30 1990 18:359
    SQL/Services uses dynamic SQL to submit requests to Rdb/Dispatch.
    Rdb/Dispatch can send requests to some non-Rdb/VMS databases using
    the interoperability gateways. We currently have 2 interoperability
    gateways: VIDA for DB2 and VIDA with IDMS/R. Therefore, SQL/Services
    can be used, currently, to access DB2 and IDMS databases. Forthcoming
    interoperability gateway products will also support access through
    SQL/Services.
