Another interesting Oracle feature mentionned on Usenet : is it really true ? /albert From: [email protected] (Dave Cohen) Subject: ORACLE Integrity Constraints Organization: Data General Corporation, Research Triangle Park, NC In "The Database Server Evaluation Guide" mailed by ORACLE to prospective ORACLE OS/2 Server customers, integrity support is described as follows : Centrally Enforced Inetgrity : The SQL dialect used by ORACLE Server includes syntactic support for definition of referential and domain integrity constraints. Semantic enforcement of constraints is not yet supported. Integrity constraints are supported using the declarative model proposed by ANSI as part of future SQL standards. Am I missing something, or does this say that you can specify referential and domain constraints in your data definitions, but the database server will not do anything with them ? Your're absolutely right. Oracle even mentioned this in a sales seminar here in Stuttgart. They just store the information in their dictionary, but the database does not touch it afterwards. -Hans | |||||

Oracle's reply : From: [email protected] (Terry Greenlaw) Subject: Re: ORACLE Integrity Constraints Organization: Oracle Corporation, Belmont, CA [quotings deleted] Actually the constraints are kept in the data dictionary and can be referenced through your applications. They were put in version 6 so that app developers could design databases now that would use them in version 7. I also believe that SQL*Forms 3.0 uses some of the restraints when it generates your master-detail coordination triggers. I actually have used the integrity constraints before when I didn't have the entity-relationship diagram handy. Terry O.
