Well, not quite a firefight, but I could sure use some information and/or pointer to information: One of our OEM prospects in the NY area was considering DEC or DG for a U*ix platform to which they could port their medical applications. This, according to the customer, is purely a marketing decision and they have made no firm committments as to what db's or languages they will use in this endeavor. We got a call from him today. He/The Company wants to go with DEC. Now they need to know the top three database & 4GL systems that run on Ultrix, either RISC or unleaded. The customer has made mention of Cognos, Unify, Progress, and Empress. I haven't heard of the latter two. Questions: o What would DEC recommend (TODAY!) for 4GL/database systems on Ultrix? Pro's and Con's? Pointers to info? o Does Cognos run on Ultrix? I thought not. o Does anyone know of, or has anyone heard of, Progress and Empress? Pointer to more information? Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide, Bob Hanson

As to what is "recommended", Informix & Ingres are certainly in the top three. Progress is a 4GL that has its own database. Their greatest success has been in large administrative situations. Empress is a database and 4GL that, I believe, was originally known as Rhodnius some years ago. They run on 88 different dialects of Unix. Seems to be a pretty good system, but an awfully small company. Yes, Cognos does run on Ultrix. Information is mostly available from vendors. There haven't been any Unix DB vs. Unix DB comparisons that have been allowed to go public. But you might consider looking in some of the Unix trades. They may well have done some type of survey that compares features at least. If it were me, I'd stick to Informix or Ingres. ---- Michael Booth

I was wrong. Cognos does NOT run on Ultrix. They run on Unix, not Ultrix. ---- Michael Booth

Bob, PROGRESS has announced an RDB Gateway for their product. Since they operate in a client/server model, your customer may be interested. Their based in Bedford but I don't have a number. You can also find out more on ULTRIX CASE in a presentation store on esgnfo::user$2:[case]ultrix.ps. Also, there is a publication put out by the ESG/CASE Program Office listing third party products. Contact Mary (CURIE::) Burdick to get a copy. The title is "CASE Third-Party Product Update". You may also want to check the CASE, CASE_COMPETITIVE and ULTRIX/SQL notes files.
