596.0. "DR selection & Oracle" by MINDER::PICKERING (O 2YUR 2YUB 2YIC URdb) Wed Mar 14 1990 15:23

    According to an Oracle advert, the readers of Digital Review voted
    Oracle the 'Best Database Management Product' for the Digital
    environment. Can someone confirm; were DR readers given a set choice of
    DBMS' to choose from & were they all 3rd party ones ie no Rdb/VMS?

    Yes, they were given a set. I think the nominees were Oracle, Ingres,
    Informix, Sybase, and 1032. It is relatively easy to "win." You just
    buy as many copies of the mag as you need to "stuff the ballot box."
    But that small expenditure pays off nicely IF you advertise heavily.

The competition is between products which had major releases during the year
before the survey. Rdb/VMS did not have a release in that time period, so it
was not eligible.

Digital employees seem to consume hundreds or thousands (or tens of...) copies
of DR and could therefore easily affect the results if they so chose. I
don't think ORACLE could or even would bother to directly influence the results.

Customers tend to vote for what they have. If Digital and Oracle have
similar market share, and Digital (Rdb/VMS) isn't even in the running, then
it holds that Oracle will win the vote. Oracle, marketing wizards that they are,
of course makes the best of it....
