Hello , A customer of ours (EBES MAPPING - ULTILITIES ) is going to start with a new mapping system. In the futur they will have to be able to communicate with the systems of municipal administrations . Since they expect most of these system to be UNIX-like they 're also looking into the UNIX-world . On the other hand there was Big Blue who told them that UNIX cannot manage large databases. The technical people at the customersite are not very Big Blue-minded so the are looking for arguments to convince their management . So now my question : Can anybody give me references on site having Ultrix (UNIX) systems with ORACLE or INGRES databases with a size of about 4 to 5 Gigabytes ? ! As usual : It 's URGENT Thanks in advance Marc Monte SWAS Brussels

What are his timescales like ? If its NOW, then it has to be INGRES, don't even think about Oracle. If its later ( this summer ? ) then why not ultrix/sql. What is the level of communication required ? - Batch or Interactive. Can't Ingres provide a referece site for *their* database ? Perhaps we could go in supporting Big Blues argument but promoting the benefits of Rdb/VMS. With the developments in NAS and VMS/posix compliance you do not HAVE to work in a vanilla UNIX environment to achieve box-box communication.

IBM is right. Doing a large commercial database on Unix is not very clever. That's why the references are non-existent. ---- Michael Booth

-> reply 1 >> What are his timescales like ? Final decision : juin 1990 But they want to run a bench in april . >> If its NOW, then it has to be INGRES, don't even think about Oracle. Why not Oracle ( sorry I'm an ULTRIX-boy , not very knowledgable about DB-stuff ) ? I was told that the ministry of agriculture purchased a DEC-system with some clients and a 9GB-Oracle_DB >> What is the level of communication required ? - Batch or Interactive. I don't , I'll contact the customer to have more info on that . |
