593.1 | Try Cognos | NOVA::BOOTH | What am I?...An Oracle? | Mon Mar 12 1990 14:34 | 6 |
| My suggestion would be to try to use Cognos (PowerHouse). The majority
of their installed base is HP. They should have experience dealing with
this kind of situation. Ingres is virtually non-existent on HP. It has
no presence in the old HP 3000, 1000 base.

593.2 | Yes - Powerhouse | MAIL::FARLOWS | Software Sells Hardware | Mon Mar 12 1990 15:26 | 16 |
| I agree with Michael that Cognos is your best bet. I have a large
customer that is in the process of converting existing Powerhouse
applications on HP machines to Powerhouse on the VAX. The HP and VAX
versions of Powerhouse are similar. Things seem to be going well for
this customer.
I would try to stay away from getting too many conflicting alternatives
being presented to the customer. It may be most effective to determine
the best alternative for the customer and then show how the alternative
meets their needs best, rather than taking a shotgun approach with a
large number of vendors and then hoping the customer can figure out how
things fit together.
Good Luck,

Sorry,
Powerhouse is not on the short list : only INGRES - ORACLE are remaining...
I just talked to the INGRES guys, they ported INGRES to the HP platform
about 4 months ago, so indeed there is no installed base.
There is not yet support for INGRES Star however for HP MPE.

| Point out cost of ownership...at least on the VAX side they may be able
to save some $$$....
Oracle will drag then under with License charges...

593.5 | INGRES ORACLE ...buyer beware | TRCO01::MCMULLEN | | Thu Mar 15 1990 14:18 | 17 |
| Don't use Ingres with Rdb....the performance is poor, Ingres support
is terrible. Check my note further back in the mid 500s. There are
all sorts of problems with the Ingres tool set. No one ever tested
them from Ingres or Digital.
Also Ingres tools do not support Rdb/VMS V3.1A. Ingres promised
to have it fixed in two days almost a month ago. Now they don't
even return phone calls.
Cognos is a better solution for this environment. Any new product
(especially a 4GL) on a new platform scares the heck out of me.
BUYER BEWARE!

| I've been running some informal "benchmarks" on the Ingres/Rdb gateway
using Rdb static SQL, Rdb dynamic SQL and Ingres dynamic SQL. The test
program simply retrieves all rows from a set of identical relations
containing from 500 to 10000 rows.
Rdb dynamic SQL provides 70% or better of the throughput achieved with
static SQL. Ingres SQL via the gateway yields bout 20% of the Rdb
static SQL throughput.
This wasn't intended to be a competitive benchmark and is far from a
complete evaluation of the products, but it does give some indication
of the cost of using the Ingres gateway.
