592.0. "MAC/RDB - CL/1" by TRCO01::SANDHU () Fri Mar 09 1990 23:09

    Can someone help or lead me to information regarding MAC to RDB
    interoperability. We have an OEM ready to start building an application
    on a MAC platform to interface with data on a VAX. In the past they
    have used Oracle, but now want to move, if possible, to Rdb.

    Question is how is this done? I just know about CL/1. But what or
    how it would work, I have no idea? Is this something like SQL Services
    for the PC. Could someone explain?

592.1or Hypercard/AlisaShare/AppletalkSRFSUP::LANGSTONRdb is *the* Relational db for the VAXSat Mar 10 1990 02:5443
    We are in the process of preparing a demonstration for a customer with
    ~1000 MACs and a DB2 database on a IBM 3090.  We're going to provide
    them read access on the MACs to the DB2 database using VIDA for
    DB2 on a VAX and connecting the whole thing as shown below.

    You should be able to use the left two-thirds of the diagram (without
    the VIDA for DB2, of course).

    CL/1, I believe, is similar to AlisaShare and/or SequeLink.
    AlisaShare is s/w and I think SequeLink is s/w (SQL) as well.

    No changes or modifications to DECnet are required; this is a local area
    Appletalk network connected to the Macintosh thru the ethernet port.
    No other changes or modifications to the VAX hardware or software
    are required.

    Obviously, it requires non-Digital products. And it requires some
    (minimal, I believe, at least for purposes of a demonstration)
    software development for Hypercard. I don't know the details of
    the Mac side of it, but I can get you in touch with the people who
    are doing it.

    Also, you may want to talk to Deb Wasserman, product manager for
    SQL/Services. She's interested to know the extent of customer demand
    for SQL/Services for the Mac.

592.2They all workPNKFLD::BOOTHWhat am I?...An Oracle?Sat Mar 10 1990 16:0210
    The big advantage of CL/1 is that it is Apple's product, and virtually
    all Mac software will interface to it. CL/1 will be part of the
    standard Mac operating system services later this year. The VAX CL/1
    server is currently available.

    Sequelink and AlisaShare also work well, but CL/1 has the advantage of
    being the Apple product. All of them are available and will allow
    Hypercard to VAX connectivity, hence Hypercard to DB2 via VIDA for DB2.

592.3CL/1 interface to RdbTRCO01::SANDHUMon Apr 02 1990 16:028
    Does the CL/1 server on the VAX have a deliverable interface to
    Rdb? If not what options are available.

    We know that the CL/1 server does have an interface to Oracle. My
    customer is very interested in the CL/1 secenario, given -.1 reasonings
    etc., however they want to know about the Rdb interface. They seemed
    to think there was no interface, if there is one, we can close the
    deal.
592.4More on CL/1 vs. SQL/ServicesCLYPPR::WASSERMANDeb Wasserman, DTN 264-1863Mon Apr 02 1990 16:4311
    I'm not sure what you mean by "a deliverable interface" to Rdb. CL/1
    is a Macintosh interface protocol that will allow Mac applications to
    access various databases, Rdb/VMS being among them. It serves a
    similar purpose as SQL/Services, the difference being that the
    same SQL/Services API is available on multiple platforms (DOS, OS/2,
    Ultrix, Mac) and is designed to work specifically with Rdb/VMS. CL/1
    more general purpose, being designed to connect Macintoshes to many
    databases.

    Take your pick, we don't care which protocol your customer uses
    as long as you're talking to Rdb.
592.5I Think it's HereCLYPPR::BOOTHWhat am I?...An Oracle?Thu Apr 05 1990 15:216
    I think the CL/1 VAX Server is available. As Deb said, it should work
    with Rdb, Oracle, Sybase, Ingres. Check with Network Innovations in
    California on delivery, but I thought the VAX CL/1 Server was now
    available.
