Did anyone see the latest COMPUTERWORLD? A friend at work dropped
a copy on my desk. In the March 5th issue, Computerworld compares
DB2, Sybase, Oracle, Ingres, Informix, SQL/DS, Rdb, Supra.
There are several criteria, most answers from a customer survey.
Here are the results from Top to Bottom -this is copied directly
from the article:
Rank Response Base Comments
1. SYBASE 48.5 Strength: Advanced RDBMS features
Weakness: Lack of front-end tools
2. Oracle 47.6 Strength: Forms Generation
Weakness: Price and Support
3. Rdb 45.6 : Ease of use
: Slow response time
4. Ingres 45.1 : Screen functions
: Performance
5. Informix 44.7 : SQL capabilities
: Not user-friendly
6. Supra 44.7 : On-line maintenance features
: Integration with other packages
7. SQL/DS 43.6 : Query capabilities
: Performance
8. DB2 43.3 : Data recovery capabilities
: Performance
These are the user ratings. The biggest negative for Oracle is vendor
support. But Sybase as having advanced RDBMS features! That really
kills me.

My favorite question:
Would you buy the product again & why?
Most customers responded intelligently, except ORACLE customers, they
admitted they would buy it again because "it's the best product on the
market".
I guess that tells us how well the ORACLE brainwashing works, and how
much the average ORACLE customer knows about databases.

You are bang on! Advertising pays off. We are always on the
defensive having to explain "..well one must truly understand benchmarks.."
etc. etc. to the customer. It is advertising that makes ORacle the
preceived leader in all areas.

Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately we have, at least in the past, been prohibited (for all practical purposes) from advertising individual products. There is little or nothing that those of us in Database Systems can do about this. If advertising is so important, then that message needs to reach upper management through other channels. Bitching and moaning here has absolutely no impact except to maybe make you feel better. We've been bitching and moaning for years, and all it does is eventually get us more frustrated. | |||||
