587.0. "Oracle performance (on RISC)" by BAHTAT::BLYTHE (Ee bah gum th's trouble at t'mill) Fri Mar 02 1990 17:17

maybe not the best place - but - it's a question we are being
         asked more.

Oracle have supplied us with some figures for Oracle on a
DECStation 5400 platform. Does anybody know how it performs,
problems there are with it, or any other info.

Unfortunately, we don't have our own offering for this platform
yet, so we have to go with other people. Oracle seem in this case
happy to work with us, but I have a suspicion they will swap to HP
just at the end and we'll come out with nowt.

The figures Oracle gave us are to help with sizing a system - will
they give the same to HP ?

         Figures :-

         DECStation 5400
3.5 to 4 users per RISC MIP
         1 MB memory per user
4 MB memory overhead on top.

Very approximate - I don't know any better - is there anybody out
there that can give me a yea or a ney ?

587.1"ORACLE for ULTRIX" LiteratureSRFSUP::LANGSTONRdb is *the* Relational db for the VAXSat Mar 03 1990 02:39107
I don't have any performance numbers, but Oracle is distributing
literature about the availability and wonderfulness of the products.

    "
    ORACLE(TM) for UNIX
Product Line Update: Digital ULTRIX/RISC Systems
    -------------------------------------------------------
ORACLE RDBMS Version 6.0 for Digital ULTRIX/RISC Systems

Oracle Corporation, the leading supplier of relational database
management systems for both the UNIX and Digital marketplaces, is
offering the ORACLE RDBMS Version 6.0 either with or without the
transaction processing option for the Digital Family of MIPS-based
    RISC computers running ULTRIX.

    ULTRIX/RISC - Performance UNIX

Digital's ULTRIX operating system is available on all MIPS-based
hardware systems, from the desktop DECstation 2100 and 3100, to
the high-end DECsystem 5800. This broad family of binary compatible
systems has set new standards for open systems price-performance.

    Support for Multi-processor Architectures

With the release of ULTRIX 4.0 (planned for the first half of 1990),
ULTRIX will provide full support for the symmetric multi-processing
(SMP) DECsystem 5820 dual processor system. ORACLE is architected
to take full advantage of SMP when it is available under ULTRIX -
ensuring near linear improvements in database performance as processors
are added to the system. This provides you with a safe and inexpensive
growth path by eliminating the need to replace systems to increase
    performance.

    ORACLE: Designed for OLTP

Advanced ORACLE features such as row-level locking permit high-speed,
multi-user access to your data in transaction-oriented environments.
ORACLE does this by locking only the data rows that each user addresses
for update, leaving other parts of the database open for access.
Queries never create locks, and locks are never escalated to either
the page or table level unless explicitly requested. "Piggy-backed"
writes combined with fast commits reduce data contention and I/O
bottlenecks, thereby helping to speed data transfers to and from
disk. Oracle's multi-version read consistency model ensures that all
data being read is instantaneously conistent - a necessary requirement
for environments running OLTP with batch reporting. Advanced ORACLE
administration features include on-line database backup to provide
high data availability with minimal scheduled downtown and utilities
for easy recovery of data in the event of a system failure.

ORACLE Version 6.0 accommodates extremely large databases that can
be stored either on local or remote workstations or servers. Oracle
front-end application tools can be run on client systems distributed
around the network. All ORACLE applications and databases have
complete portability between different systems, hardware architectures,
    and operating systems.

    Support for the Digital Environment

ORACLE for ULTRIX currently supports distributed data applications,
an integral part of the Digital enterprise computing solution, using
both the TCP/IP and DECnet protocols. ORACLE for ULTRIX is completely
compatible with desktop, department, and datacenter environments,
whether those environments are MS-DOS, Macintosh OS, ULTRIX, or
    VMS.

    Oracle*Mail

Oracle*Mail, the first offering in Oracle's new family of integrated
office automation products, is a powerful relational DBMS-based
electronic mail system which allows users to exchange and manage
all types of information across heterogeneous computer systems and
    network protocols.

    Strategic Directions

    DECwindows

Oracle, a charter member of Digital's DECwindow's [sic] ISV program,
is working to include a DECwindow [sic] user interface on all graphical
Oracle products. A high productivity DECwindow [sic] user interface
exists for both SQL*Forms 2.3 and CASE*Designer. With DECwindows,
users on VMS and ULTRIX systems will share a common user interface
"look and feel", providing easy migration between the two Digital
    operating environments.

    OSF and OSF/Motif

Oracle is a member of OSF, X/Open, and UNIX International and is
working with all three organizations to help foster User Interface
standards in the UNIX environment. Oracle is committed to provide
OSF/Motif based products in early 1990.

    Future Products

Oracle's CASE products for the Version 6.0 RDBMS, along with SQL*Forms
3.0 (character mode) are currently in beta testing and will be
available shortly on Digital ULTRIX systems.

[There are two boxed areas on the sheet one titled "Product
Information" listing thirteen products with version numbers and
brief (one-line) descriptions and the other titled "Digital's RISC
Family" with "MIPS/VUPS," "Memory," and "Disk" -headed columns, which
I'll type in later. I gotta go, now.]
587.2Seems OKNOVA::BOOTHWhat am I?...An Oracle?Fri Mar 09 1990 16:145
Word of Mouth is that Oracle is quite a good performer on RISC/ULTRIX.

I haven't seen anything definitive, but that's what I have heard.
