582.0. "Rdb/VMS + as400 " by WARNUT::BRYAN () Mon Feb 26 1990 12:07

    Hi, can anybody provide any input on the following.

     Whats 4gl's run on VMS/Rdb AND AS400/host_db ?

     Whats popular third party db's run on the AS400, is it really none ?

    I'm currently responding to an ITT where the hardware paltforms are
    VAX/VMS and AS400 and they are looking for a strategic db(s).

      Cheers
       Charles B.

582.4None YetNOVA::BOOTHWhat am I?...An Oracle?Fri Mar 09 1990 16:057
    Oracle has "promised" that their database will run on AS/400 within
    about 18 months. Of course, the "promises" were made to individual
    customers.

    There is currently no third party database for AS/400.

582.5DATABASES ON AS/400TRCO01::MESICTue May 01 1990 23:348
    What IBM database(s) do run on the AS/400 then? We are replying
    to an RFP and the AS/400 is the only competition.

    Any information would be most helpful.

    thanks in advance,

    Correct me if you wish but:

    the AS/400 seems to be a second generation System 38. It has an
    operating system with an integrated database management system. The 38
    called it CPF, it think the as/400 calls it OS/400. I do not know of
    ANY 3rd party DB on the machine. 3rd party 4GLS are a different story.

    I do not believe that their SQL implementation is close to the standard
    nor close to those of SQL/ds or DB2. I do not believe they offer
    referential integrity in their DB nor many pieces of functionality
    people might look at.

    The AS/400 native db does offer referential integrity as an option
    that you can turn on if you wish (I think). You can also turn
    recovery features on and off (journaling, etc.). However, most shops
    run with the journalling off, since the performance hit that it
    causes makes response unacceptable in a production environment. If
    you browse this conference you'll find trade rag story about it
    which was reprinted in VNS.
582.8SQL/400 Not Good at allMAIL::DUNCANGGerry Duncan @KCO - DTN 452-3445Fri May 04 1990 00:3015
    I subscribe to News 3x/400 and there was an article in their on SQL/400
    that described how far it was off from the current SQL standard. If
    you want a copy of this, send me Email and I'll try to find it next
    week.

    Be aware, that all of the Rpg and Cobol programs that run on the AS/400
    use the database. Basically, there is no such thing as a flat file...
    they are all tables on this machine. I worked in the S/34-36 arena
    during the time when the s/38 was introduced. In my opinion, not many
    of these people could/would use SQL as an interface after having years
    of experience without SQL. Also, keep in mind that these are the
    people who are developing for AS/400 so I'm not sure how widely SQL/400
    is being used.
