557.0. "500+ on ADIBAS etc." by BREW11::QUINN () Tue Jan 30 1990 13:50
I'd like to get some comments with regard to running an OLTP
enviroment with several hundred users on a Gigabyte size
database using the following software.
Cognos (Powerhouse)
Relational Technology (Ingres)
Sybase Software
Performance Software (Systel)
Software AG (Natural)
Rapid Gen (Genius)
The customer is a major U.K. Travel Agent. They want to
develop an OLTP system for Shop staff to load in Customer
Information into a central system. Information such as
customer details, and financial information. The information
will be stored in a central database, with customer details
for reference and payments consolidation (i.e. add up all the
payments to one holiday supplier for the week and write a
large cheque) The database is likely to be in the order of
Gigabytes in size. They intend to have terminals in all
their shops (in total 500+) accessing the system.
To even get to the first stage i.e talking to the cuastomer.
Suppliers have to be able to quote an example of a site
anywere in the world that has at least 500 connected
terminals.
As you may gather from the list, the IT director has it in
his mind to use a 4GL enviroment. We will be explaining the
Digital view with regards to DECtp etc. However we have been
asked to give a view on our experiences with the above
software.
They will be running this system on a 8842 with terminals
connected from remote sites probably via an X.25 network.
Has anyone any comments to make as to the suitability of
these systems in a VAXcluster, SMP, X.25 environment.
Cheers
Keith.
