Gupta Technologies was started in 1984 by the PC Product Manager
at Oracle, Mr. <someone> Gupta. The company is about 32 employees
and does about 1-2 milllion in sales. They have a rdbms that
competes with Oracle on the PC. They have gateways to DB2 &
Oracle as well as an Oracle Router (Not sure what this does) They
do not run on VMS, they do not have any plans to use SQL Services
to access Rdb although they will not pass up the chance if someone
should wish to fund the development.
They have recently been given some 10-15 million by Novell to
better distribute the database across PCs.

give you more information.

Paul,
it would help Gupta to make a decision to implement a SQL/Services
link if any prospective customers ask for it. They are, like all
other ISVs, driven by "popular demands" ...

It is on Gupta and Novell
Novell and Gupta Announce Joint Products
Novell and Gupta announced joint products, including SQL Windows
for Btrieve, the SQLBase 5.0 Server NLM, and the Gupta SQL
Gateway from NetWare to DB2. Novell plans to develop an
interface that provides transparent access to its NetWare SQL via
Gupta's SQL Windows. Gupta said that SQLWindows for Btrieve
buyers can create applications for the over 300,000 NetWare LANs
that are already installed, because every copy of NetWare has
Btrieve bundled in it.
Novell's VP and GM of the Austin Development Center, Nancy
Woodward, said, "With the availability of SQLWindows for Btrieve,
application developers now have a new, simplified way to create
or customize Windows-based client/server applications for the
NetWare environment."
The product will be jointly marketed by both firms. Novell's and
Gupta's sales and marketing staffs will be cross trained on the
features of the product and on the key technical highlights.
Gupta will provide technical support.
SQLWindows for Btrieve is available now from Gupta. Price is
$1,595, which includes five run-time versions of SQLWindows, the
standard SQLWindows Development Kit, and the Btrieve library.
The SQLBase 5.0 Server NLM is slated for availability in 4Q. The
Gupta SQL Gateway from NetWare to DB2 is slated for availability
in 1Q92. Prices were not given.
The interface between NetWare SQL and SQL Windows will be
included in subsequent releases of the NetWare SQL product. It
will be available at no charge from Novell in 3Q on NetWire (CSN
notes available from Novell resellers). (IFW,3/4/91,p29;

| I am currently in a situation where a customer of mine has a large
installed base of VAXes in remote sites that need to share
information. My client also has a large IBM mainframe shop(5 3090
class machines).
My client wants to intergrate information that resides on the VAXes
with info in DB2 databases on the mainframe. To perform this
intergration the client wants to use PC's as the client being servered
by the VAXes and the IBM mainframe. The PC's will be MS-DOS systems,
some with MICROSOFT WINDOWS V3.0 and some in character cell mode.
I know how to configure the DOS PC's to access the VAX data via PCSA,
and I know about access to the DB2 database via VIDA product for DB2.
My questions pertain to my clients potential need to use GUPTA SQL on
PC LAN servers to access either RDB if possible and DB2 on the
mainframe. The follwoing questions are geared toward understanding how
GUTPA's products would work in this scenario.
Does anyone know if SQLWindows will run on any other network operating
system other than Netware? Specifically, will the Gupta product run
under OS/2 and LAN MANAGER?
How does Gupta access a DB2 database from either Netware or OS/2 LAN
MANAGER.
Can the GUPTA server work in a non windows environment.
Does GUPTA access RDB yet.
