504.0. "TRIFOX or QMF tools on Rdb?" by KETJE::VANTRICHT (Eddy VAN TRICHT) Wed Nov 29 1989 17:50

We have an IBM customer which has trained his user on QMF
    (Query Management Facility).
Now they are looking for a relational database on VAX to offload the
IBM, however they want to avoid to retrain their users.

It happens that Oracle has a product called SQL*QMX which simulate
perfectly QMF (seems to be totaly similar for end-users).

I also heard some rumours that this product was originally developped
by TRIFOX. This company has some tools working with Rdb, so there
is maybe hope to find there a similar product directly working with
    Rdb.

Can anyone give me a description of TRIFOX tools or at least contact,
phone or address of TRIFOX ?

    Eddy,

I do not know anything about the SQL*QMX product other than Trifox
developed it and Oracle is now marketing it.

I am not sure if this product works with Rdb/VMS, but I know that
Trifox have other products that do.

The person that may be able to help you is :

Please reply once you have an answer on this, this could be a good
sales opportunity in other accounts as well.

    Regards,
    Michael

I did contact TRIFOX (Brian Skone).

He told me that they did indeed develop the SQL*QMX product for ORACLE
and the product was technically build such a way that it could run on
any rel.db on the VAX (Rdb, Ingres, Sybase, ...).
However he told me that ORACLE has EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS for 2 years on the QMF
lookalike product, this makes it impossible for TRIFOX to help us before that
delay expires !

We can now follow 3 alternatives strategies:
1) check if some other company has developped or could develop a similar
   product running with Rdb.
2) I heard also that ORACLE plans to announce an SQL*CONNECT interface to Rdb.
We could use this to suggest to our customer (which already uses Rdb)
to only use SQL*CONNECT and SQL*QMF in conjunction with Rdb
awaiting the availability (within 2y) of our QMF product.
3) suggest another product with similar and superior capabilities
(however this is probably not what the customer wants because they want
to offer similar functionality to their users on VAX and IBM
and they want to avoid retraining their users on another product).

PS : I received from Brian SKONE (TRIFOX) a FAX with a short description
about their tools to facilitate migration of ORACLE applications
     to Rdb :
     TRIM/APP similar to Oracle's SQL*Forms
     TRIM/REPORT similar to Oracle's SQL*RPT (reportwriter)
TRIM/TRANSLATE utility for translations of Oracle SQL*Forms to TRIM/APP.

That product is finally available! It is called TRIM/qmr
(QS-HFEA9-NL), and our Center for Migration Servies sells it and
    suports it.
