496.0. "ORACLE_PC knockoff information?" by OBIWAN::HANSON (Imagine...) Thu Nov 16 1989 22:05

    Although I've seen smatterings of my upcoming request around this
    conference, I haven't found anything really comprehensive...

    Does anyone have a list or writeup of ORACLE-PC knockoffs and
    advantages? I've got a great opportunity coming up, and would
    like to knock them down early.

    Thanks,
    Bob H

496.1What will your strategy be?MABUZZ::BUZZERDWhy NOT Rdb ??Fri Nov 17 1989 23:0612
    Is your strategy to convice the customer they don't want a db on a PC,
    or that they should look at another one, e.g., INGRES? Or, to convice
    them to go the SQL Services route? I have some info on Oracle's PC
    products, including their LANServer product to connect the PCs.
    I'd be glad to send it to you, but it is primarily informational; it
    does not compare PC-Oracle with any other PC database.

    But we're getting PC Oracle here, soon, so we may have more information
    in  a few weeks.

    re .0

    My understanding is that ORACLE PC is an ORACLE V5.0 product and
    ORACLE currently have no plans to update it to V6.0. This means
    that if the PC is running an ORACLE db and the VAX has ORACLE on
    it, the only way they will communicate properly is if the VAX remains
    at version V5.0 of ORACLE.

    ORACLE has been saying how superior their V6.0 product is, but if
    the customer wants to use PC's they can not use any of the new
    features. Try again Mr ORACLE !!!

    I have also heard a roumor that ORACLE's SQl*Forms for the PC is
    not compatible with the V3 SQL*Forms product on the VAX. Can anyone
    verify this?

    Regards,
    Michael

496.3ORACLE PC incompatibilities - TRUE or FALSETRCO01::MCMULLENMon Jan 15 1990 15:037
    Has anyone been able to verify the previous replies statements about
    ORACLE V5.0? Is it true the PC ORACLE will not be able to communicate
    with V6.0 of ORACLE? How about the SQL*Forms incompatibilities -
    true or false?

    ORACLE says, V5 PC ORACLE will talk to V6 ORACLE via SQLNET. We
    tried to order V6 of PC ORACLE and they shipped us V5.1. They did
    mention that between those versions, not all the tools are compatible.

    (this probably didn't help you much did it....)
